Is there a way to discuss things on / / ?

For example, I'm visiting for the next couple of days and wanted to ask locals what kind of trees are planted around the "Sea Front Gardens" Green https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/178239906

"Your activity on GitHub includes you in this requirement." great bit of content design there

On this day in 1969, humans walked on the moon. So let's take the opportunity to talk about the moon and its relationship to menstruation. Does the moon influence our menstrual cycles at all?

da5nsy,
@da5nsy@social.coop avatar

@vagina_museum Do you know whether aggregated data from period tracking apps has/could be used to investigate this? (And whether that data is made available? Privacy nightmare obviously - would need to be done incredibly carefully)

I used to publish my slides on SpeakerDeck, which is now long defunct, and then defaulted to do it in SlideShare, but I'm not hundred percent convinced. I'd like to find a more open way of publishing them.

Is there any Fediverse friendly way of publishing them? Maybe some of the open access tools?

I'd be most grateful if you could boost this question if the topic is of your interest…

Sometimes following the standard practice makes things not work as well. Like, it'd be so much easier for me to read math equations if the variables were named first, instead of writing out this huge equation then saying "where B denotes the constant parameter ... " after. Why are most equations written like this?

Here's a template for replying to review requests, if you like:

> If the article is available as a preprint, I will happily publicly review it (on PREReview) and then transfer my review to [your system].
>
> It doesn't look like the article is available as a preprint yet.
>
> If there is a credible reason why this article cannot be shared as a pre-print, let me know, and I will reconsider.

@da5nsy@social.coop avatar

@AndrewReid @elduvelle

I agree.

Re: articles that do need privacy - I'm willing to entertain that that could be required sometimes, but I think that should be the exception rather than the norm.

da5nsy,
@da5nsy@social.coop avatar

@elduvelle

I'd go further than @AndrewReid's reply (https://neuromatch.social/@AndrewReid/110743035569990627)
and say that submitting unfinished work for peer review is borderline unethical under our current system: if the contributions of a peer reviewer takes a work from "unfinished" to "finished", then they're an author and should be treated/rewarded as such

da5nsy,
@da5nsy@social.coop avatar

@elduvelle

And I would argue that it should be standard practice to update preprints following any changes that occur during peer review, such that all copies available online are identical (save for journal aesthetics).
I don't think that this is the norm yet[1], but I think we should be striving for that.

I feel like an increasingly large part of my "how to spend time" thought process is:

  • Interact with a for-profit company that annoys me (either by being straight-up immoral, or just not very good)
  • Look to see if there is a / / alternative
  • Take my annoyed energy to try and contribute to the development of that alternative

Think I just found my spiciest bug yet:
"Long pressing URL causes two duplicates of that URL to appear in a new block"

https://github.com/logseq/logseq/issues/9876

Most of my other bug reports have been pretty minor things in comparison to this. This is WEIRD.

da5nsy,
@da5nsy@social.coop avatar

Is it weird that one of my favourite hobbies is filling bug reports for projects? It helps me feel like I'm helping even if I don't have the skillset to deep dive into a specific codebase ☺️
... and it appeals to my "but it's not right" instincts! 😂

I think as an I've been exceptionally lucky to have the flexibility to be able to be remunerated for many of the things that I'd be doing if money didn't exist.

Thinking about this a lot at the moment as I enter a new life chapter that may or may not involve "Academia" to the same extent.

Are there any companies* that are legit good?

Like ideally:

  • Not placing profit above literally everything else
  • firmware
  • Prioritizing longevity, and user modification/upgrade
  • Probably non-toxic/eco-friendly ink (I don't know but my guess is that this isn't a priority for the big players...)

*company or other entity... like, gimme some open-source designs for a printer that you can build yourself too, that works haha
