Make my own lead sheet(s) instead of the stupid chord sheets/tabs available everywhere.

seems really great for this.

The only problem is that while I know about than a chord sheet assumes I know less than I probably need to, for instance, line the lyrics up with the beat.

But it's all a process! It's OK to be terrible! Everyone starts somewhere! (he snarled through gritted teeth)

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

We seem to be getting somewhere!

This is compiled from multiple sources. The chords come from an amalgamation of play-along videos (where the chord is the open fingering played with a capo on the first fret) modified by me to things I can reasonably play

The part is only there because needs to attach lyrics to something. So I'm transposing an existing piano arrangement to this (apparent) key

can play . Playing along (w/o capo) sounds great!

If someone knows a way to make put fretboard diagrams off to the side or at the top/bottom of the page, I'd love that.

I can probably remember how to finger Dsus4, D7 and Am7 but G/B will likely escape me down the road.

Googling this gives me solutions for putting it on all desktops. I want to pin it to a single desktop.

I know I did this before on another machine.

Recent have been

⭐Cuba Libre
⭐Long Island Ice Tea
⭐White Russian
⭐Kamikaze
⭐Sidecar

✅Between the Sheets
✅El Presidente
✅Gin Rickey

❌Bacardi Cocktail
❌Blue Lagoon

What I've learned so far is that I like a long, strong cocktail, probably with fruity flavors, especially citrus.

(I suspect the Blue Lagoon was a misfire. I like Cointreau and Triple Sec, so I should like Blue Curacao. But I felt yucky afterwards.)

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

@drinkstodon

more this week

⭐Chocolate Espresso Martini
⭐Cosmopolitan
⭐Culto a la Vida
⭐Gin Sour
✅Hairy Navel

I bought cranberry juice just to make more cocktails and boy is the internet not clear if they want plain cranberry or "mixed fruit cocktail".

The Culto a la Vida was even better than I expected based on the ingredients. Lime and cranberry is :chef_logo:😗

I think a Fuzzy/Hairy Navel would be better with lemonade. Orange juice is boring.

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

@drinkstodon Had some stuff going on this week so didn't try a lot of

⭐Bee's Knees
⭐Caipirinha
❌ Sex on the Beach
❌ Swimming Pool

The Swimming Pool I only made because it looked fun. I hate pineapple. I hate curdled cream(?!) And I might be allergic to blue curacao[1]. This is the first cocktail I genuinely just poured down the sink. Ugh.

[1]Is that even possible? No problem with Cointreau or Triple Sec. This is the second or maybe third Blue C drink that's made me physically ill.

I knew he was smart albeit cocky.

I stopped him on everything he was doing to concentrate on a branch he's been "this week for sure"ing for months. (Those other things weren't moving either)

I suggested that we pair-program it to get it optimized

He turned me down on Thursday

Today he changed his mind

As a parent of 5, I know how to be gentle but firm. I've been told I'm good at teaching. I love fixing things

I feel like tomorrow will be fun.

davidr,

I was right, this was fun.

I mentioned early on that it was probably going to take 2h or more. He was like....what, no, maybe 30m.

Reader, we took 3.5h and didn't even really finish.

Cleaned up the significantly and got the easier case from 2m to 11s, hard case from 20m to 2m.

We had to quit, but I think we could have squeezed another 2x out of his code alone. We can easily get another 10x from multiprocessing.

Why are there no tools (for ) that work like a engine? I want to do more than rotate and zoom. I want to translate my rotation point. I want to walk around inside my . Let me explore parameter space directly.

If it doesn't already exist, maybe I'll have to make my own style plotting tool.

Been aiming towards a technical accomplishment for months that isn't on any statement-of-work. Getting mostly polite nods and agreements from coworkers.

Yesterday I got it working. Nodders were suddenly excited. "Hey, this is giving me ideas!"

No kidding.

Even in an R&D context, too many are project-focused instead of tool-focused. It isn't about delivering a result, it's about ending up with a capability!

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

Given the motto of the university I work for, it's very frustrating that the and the operators barely talk to each other.

The engs don't know what problems need solving, even when working on something adjacent. The ops don't know what the engs are on about and don't have time to learn.

Success here is mostly just showing up to meetings on both sides and being a conduit. A catalyst.

"I think they are building a tool like this. Let me see if I can make it work for you" == a 10% raise

Meanwhile I'm terrible at self-promotion (despite what these toots sound like).

I'm supposed to be writing Annual Accomplishments. h a t e i t

I can jot down things I worked on, but verbs ("led effort", "created", "contributed to", "supported") always feel like I'm taking sole credit or attaching myself to someone else's success.

I've got two recent grads in my group under my de facto...mentorship? Command?

They are both very smart. One is very confident he can do things but is less effective, one is less confident and more effective.

I'm very unused to constructive criticism and other skills so I'm not sure how to turn down the confidence and turn up the effectiveness.

I mean, I know what to do. "Test. Be skeptical of your own work/ideas."

I don't know how to say that.

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

I think the confident/ineffective one is more theoretically trained and I'm more practically focused. Maybe he'd do better in a research setting

(Or maybe not, since he already doesn't really check his work)

This code he's written is too slow by at least two orders of magnitude and I personally would aim for 10^3 faster. Do I make him fix it? Just use it as-is anyway? Fix it myself?

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

Welp. Got my 100x back at least.

By fixing a bug in his code where he used the wrong variable name in a timestep.

Sure, anyone can have a bug. But this bug would be wasting him ~30m per test (vs ~10s) and should have been found first thing.

Is there, like, peer-reviewed seasoning instructions out there? Science-based?

I'm sick of "this is what my grandfather taught me" or "I've always found that" info. I want F A C T S.

This is "making clear ice", "guaranteed peelable hardboiled eggs" or "how to stop hiccups" all over again.

(In all seriousness, if you @ me with anecdata, I will block you.)

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

Absent a scientific consensus on seasoning, I sampled a whole bunch of sources and picked out the common themes

  1. clean surface
  2. very thin layer of oil
  3. heat
  4. goto 2 at least once

The thin layer was surprisingly stressed (directly or indirectly ["upside down to let any extra run out", etc]) by a lot of sources.

The temperature was surprisingly unstressed.

So I'm assembling an tank to 100% strip a pan and boot one up to a good state as an experiment.

davidr,
@davidr@hachyderm.io avatar

Much of the precipitate(?) ends up on the electrodes (including the skillet). At 4h, I pulled it out to take a look and brush these clean for renewed efficiency.

mfw seasoning instructions are under the crust

The inside is noticeably less stripped. I'm guessing the anode on that side is less efficient + the distance is farther due to the concave shape. I rotated the pan for round 2.

backside of the cast iron pan has been cleaned about 90%
