Figuring out the length of spokes I need to rebuild my Sturmey Archer hub into a different wheel is harder than I was expecting.

There are a lot of online calculators, sure, but you have to disassemble your wheel to get the measurement the calculator needs.

I don't want to disassemble my wheel until I have the spokes for rebuilding it!

dragonfrog,
@dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@MLE_online If the hub an is AW, you can use the spec sheet from Sturmey Archer's website. The AW you can buy new today is dimensionally identical where it matters to one from from immediately after WWII.

@MLE_online

Oh I had missed that your rim was also in a wheel currently in use.

You can do it without fully disassembling the wheel - though you do have to take the tire and rim tape off so it's still a bit of a faff.

This video from the 5:20 mark does a good job of showing the method. He calculates the outside diameter by measuring the radius - usually you can get away with just adding 10 mm to the ERTRO bead seat diameter.

I told #copilot I wanted an ASCII art of a volvo driving in Texas. It first told me I had to sign in to create images. I told it I wasn't asking for an image, but ASCII art. It then complied with something that doesn't look like a Volvo, and definitely has nothing that even stereotypically looks Texan.

@jpmens changing background colour seems like bit a good idea and something that could pretty easily be accomplished with sudo.

dragonfrog,
@dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ascherbaum @jpmens yeah I'm thinking it might already be achievable through root's bashrc or similar, but that's system wide.

It would be nice to let users individually choose that through a sudorc rather than turning it on or off for root on a whole system.

Most BLM protesters were white people advocating for Black civil rights.♥️ All their lives, they thought that they had the 1st amendment right to protest, because they had seen white supremacists march without being beaten by cops. They didn't realize that the right to free speech depends heavily on what you are speaking about, and who you are speaking for.

Now I'm seeing college professors and students learn the same lesson about what US cops will do to you if you speak up for the wrong thing.

dragonfrog,
@dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@escarpment @mekkaokereke @psa I don't think that is what he's saying. I mean, I'm pretty sure he believes it to be bad, but it's not the point he's making here.

The point is that there clearly isn't a "right" for black people to bear arms, no matter what the constitution says, when cops know and act in the knowledge that if they murder a black person, all they have to do to get away with it is make it look like their victim was exercising that "right".

dragonfrog,
@dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@escarpment @mekkaokereke @psa ...and therefore he's not going to pretend that there is such a right, in the face of overwhelming evidence that there isn't.

    @grivettcarnac it would probably be a good idea and also it would require the agreement of the senate, commons, and 7 provinces representing at least half the population.

    Quebec isn't going to give up authority to the feds ever, Alberta isn't going to agree to a measure designed to curb Alberta's abuse, and Ontario contains almost 40% of Canadians. So we'd need Ontario plus all but one other province.

    Lots of debate about this, so I'm curious about the consensus.

    Should children be allowed to act professionally, as in having a full time acting job in movie/TV/stage? Feel free to elaborate in the comments.

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @ironclad_chomskyan @RickiTarr

    One of the things that (well run, current) movie productions with child stars do, is have a full time teacher at the production location, so "when not in school" means "scenes with the kids in them have shortened filming days, to allow time for lessons", and doesn't have to mean "movies with child actors can only be set during a few months of the year and child actors from different hemispheres can never work together".

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @RickiTarr @ironclad_chomskyan

    I'd argue that most full time school pupils get less than three hours of effective education a day. No fault of the teachers - it's just that teaching 20 kids limits how long you can give to each one.

    My neighbour's kid years ago was home schooled. Far from being a big time commitment, as the only pupil in the class she easily cracked through the provincial curriculum at 2 hours a day, and had the rest of the day for swimming, karate, music, etc.

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @ironclad_chomskyan @RickiTarr

    Again - this kid who was my neighbour had loads of good quality interactions with her friends - having them over, visiting them, bike rides, playing music together, getting ideas for projects and pursuing them, etc.

    Her friends just weren't school friends like most of mine were at that age, they were friends from the neighbourhood, from karate lessons, swimming lessons, guitar lessons, and friends she met through those friends.

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @ironclad_chomskyan @RickiTarr

    I can't speak to your experience Ricki, but IMO there's a broad spectrum between "home schooling" so the kid isn't exposed to ungodly influences like music with drums and girls who wear trousers, and "home schooling" so the kid has more time and freedom to pursue their own interests, projects, and friendships outside of the questionably healthy environment of a school.

    And the former gives a bad name to the latter.

    On the one hand, Danielle Smith is timing the re-instatement of the Provincial Fuel Tax at the same time that the Carbon Tax is raised, so she can blame all price increases on the Federal government instead of the Provincial government.

    What is most disturbing of all however, is the fact that the CPC and the UCP are constantly telling us that multi-billion dollar oil corporations should not pay their own taxes, but should pass the buck to us and make us consumers pay their taxes for them!! /1

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @zenheathen @swordgeek @zazzoo @pinhman @ned

    It doesn't work that way.

    A tax "write off" just means that they get to not pay tax on a particular incoming amount of money, because it went out in a tax-protected direction.

    If you donate $10 at the till, and the store passes that $10 on to the charity - the "tax writeoff" just means that the store doesn't claim that $10 as income (because it's not). Financially it's the same to the store if you donate or not.

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @zenheathen @swordgeek @zazzoo @pinhman @ned

    Personally however, you are passing up the opportunity to write off the $10 of your own income you just donated.

    So, if you donate directly, the government doesn't collect taxes on that $10 of your income, if you donate at the till they do because you have no charitable receipt to show.

    Puns or Pranks, which are the best jokes?

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @ned pranks have to be really really carefully executed to be funny and not cruel.

    Like, adding googly eyes on packages in stores - funny, and I'd count it as a prank more than anything else. Elaborate rickrolls (especially in non-computer settings like when Rick Astley jumped out of a Sesame Street parade float) - funny pranks.

    Puns on the other hand, always fun and no risk of being hurtful.

    As we hear reports that it will take 10 years (🤯) to replace the 1.6 mile Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, remember that China built the Danyang-Kunshan bridge and Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in 4 years each.

    Danyang-Kunshan Bridge is 102 miles long, and 100 ft above the water.

    Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 16 miles and 623 ft tall, earthquake and typhoon proof, and can withstand a direct strike from a 300,000 ton cargo ship. That last point is unfortunately topical.

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @hazelweakly @PJ_Evans @mekkaokereke from my time in (non-US) government, the government has to get "the best deal". That doesn't always mean the cheapest bid - price can be say 40% of the points and other scored elements will make up 60% (it was always a struggle with the procurement people to get the percentage for cost as low as we could to have a chance at a decent product), or all the non-financial features will be awarded points and the contract awarded based on cost per point.

    dragonfrog,
    @dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @hazelweakly @PJ_Evans @mekkaokereke The important thing was everything about how "value" would be judged had to be spelled out in advance, more rigourously the more the contract was likely to cost, because losing proponents might sue if they thought they lost on vibes, reputation, prior relationships, etc. - anything not spelled out in the call for bids.
