early in the pandemic i remember reading this comment from someone about how covid might traumatize us about their grandma who lived through the 1918 flu pandemic. they said that until her death she was always very worried about the flu and she would always make sure her house was very well ventilated by leaving windows or doors open

i fucking get it now. their grandma wasn't traumatized, their grandma knew it never went away even if people pretended it had, she knew that airborne respiratory viruses were really bad for you, and she knew ventilation helped keep them away from her

this poor woman, people treating her like she was traumatized and crazy all her life when she knew what was what better than most people

@wesdym @eniko I was reading an account of a guy traveling on foot across Europe in 1933, and something that scared me stiff was in Germany taking about the Nazi party "every household is divided right now" or something like that. It was holy shit that sounds familiar. Terrifying.

Degrowth is the only hope

Imagine a world where you work three or four days a week. In your free time, you play sports, spend time with loved ones, garden, and engage with local politics. Overnight shipping, advertising, private jets, billionaires and SUVs no longer exist, but health care, education, and clean electricity are free and available to all.

We must massively reduce our energy and material consumption to have any hope of saving our environment.

I've seen a talk from a US farmer prescribing regenerative agriculture who maintains that he gets as good or better results from no till no fertiliser no pesticide, minimal herbicide than from conventional agriculture. He apparently ran it side by side when he started out.

The Mastodon development team currently suggest enabling #hCaptcha in order to combat the current spam wave in the fediverse.

However, hCaptcha discriminates genuine users with disabilities from accessing your instance. So if people and inclusion are important to you, please just don't. Consider closing your public registrations instead, for the time being.

Additional info is on the thread 🧵 #MastoAdmin

@kc also every time I solve a captcha, I'm mildly resentful at being forced to train someone's "AI"

The thing is, "the faithful" will tell you there is evidence God exists, in fact many of them will twist things into knots to find some evidence. In fact, I don't have any evidence that it doesn't, not being able to prove a negative. Just like I've no evidence fairies don't exist or unicorns.

Hello @compost,
Question, if you have time: my dad has a load of wood chips he's made, he thinks too much carbon will "draw all the nitrogen out of the soil" if he uses it as mulch. Is that right? Is it best straight in the compost, or can he mulch with it?

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@compost I don't mean to be a dick when you've been helpful, but I think the religious stuff might turn him off somewhat and not help me convince him. Do you have any secular material?

Bill Clinton banned assault weapons in 1994; mass shootings dropped by 43%.

George W. Bush and the GOP let the assault weapons ban expire in 2004; mass shootings increased by 245%.

These numbers tell the whole story.

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik
I'm not even from the US, but aren't a lot of school shootings carried out by school kids, not vets? And regardless how mentally ill you are, if you don't have a gun it's impossible to shoot someone.

@Strandjunker

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik @Strandjunker that was a gun...

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik
A constructed gun is still a gun, but I was being pernickty. I understand your point, and I think you understand mine too :-)

@Strandjunker

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik @Strandjunker can you talk more to the Australian problems?
I assume that any restrictions will reduce the amount of guns available, since iirc you can just buy a gun in the supermarket in US? Or that's some trope? So making them less available will still reduce the amount of them since not everyone is motivated or able to make their own. It's also a matter of changing the culture, so that owning a gun isn't socially acceptable.

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik @Strandjunker but as a result of new gun control laws in Australia, or pattern exports from US?

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik @Strandjunker what checks? How do you go about buying a gun?

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik @Strandjunker so in the easiest case you can go in, fill in a form, wait a few minutes and walk out with a gun?
Any idea what red flags might be? Is it easy to game? Like can you put fake details in?

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@vik @Strandjunker I'm unlikely to be in a position to anyway, not living in US.

Any questions?

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@asbestos
I'm not about to start buying any, but I read that it can have a placebo effect. Further, I read the placebo effect works even if you're aware that it's just a placebo. So it could be a cheap (!) way to help some people.

@guillermouria @bazkie @lednabwm

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@asbestos @guillermouria @bazkie @lednabwm quite. Don't think they should be covered by public insurance though, as is the case currently in Germany. Like the "3G filters" I saw advertised online, I feel like this is pretty victimless, they're selling peace of mind the way I look at. If people want to throw their money away, more fool them.

, 31 Jan 2013, women in Paris are officially allowed to wear trousers.

The 1799 law had required women to ask police for permission to "dress as men", or risk being taken into custody. Amendments in 1892 and 1909 were made to allow women to wear trousers if they were holding horse reins or a bicycle handle. The law was widely ignored.

Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, France's minister of women's rights, lifted the ban as “incompatible with the principles of equality between women and men”.

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@nilsskirnir @CarveHerName wee bit victim blamey there aren't you? Unless that was a joke that whooshed over my head.

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@sewblue @nilsskirnir @CarveHerName I knew most of that, I'm saying that rape apologists often defend themselves by saying that what the victim was wearing was provocative and therefore it's the victim's fault they were assaulted. This is called victim blaming. It's not a victim's job to protect themselves against potential assault, it's the aggressor's job to keep to themselves.

This new system will begin to be rolled out in 2025.

Hopefully, the Tories will be dead by then but ...

The DWP is to begin continuous surveillance of the bank accounts of all pension credit, universal credit and employment and support allowance claimants using powers under a bill currently going through Parliament. The department has said it intends to use its new power to force any third party to pass on data to them.

I'm gonna put my riches in the Cayman Islands xx

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@Wen @Geri well requiring voter ID has the "benefit" of making harder for your opponent's voters to vote, so there's that.
