@weebdeluxe @bookstodon I always find the idea of quantifying your reading strange.. As if reading was worthwhile of itself. Surely all that matters is that you're getting something out of it, learning or enjoyment? Every person and book is different. I feel like the real question is different, maybe "am I trying hard enough?" Measuring yourself against others won't bring you happiness.
If you've some other purpose and I'm out of line, I apologise; obviously I'm missing context.

"Let's Stop Calling It 'Content''

I first starting noticing the word "content" in the late 90s

Companies looking to put writing, animation, video or art on their web sites would call it "content"

It flattened innumerable forms of culture into a sort of goo, extruded from a tube

25 years on, the term "content" has metastasized, eating whole the way many people talk about -- think about -- culture.

Let's stop now

@tim @clive yes, as with nearly everything, it's context dependent. Kind of still need that word for my job.. It's just escaped it's normal habitat and is now an invasive weed in normal public discourse.

Our neighbors will often burn their trash in their backyards even if it is not allowed.

This is why we have worms. They will decompose cardboard, paper, woodchips, leaves, grass clippings... Since we have our worms we have never done a fire in our backyard except for barbecue. Oh, they can even be fine with the charcoal of a fire if cold.

Check out our blog we explain how to set up composting worm bins and stop sending carbon in the air.

As Prof. John Curtice observes (after his latest polling), showing around 80% of likely labour voters are pro-EU:

'Labour does have to realise it will find itself back in office off the back of an electorate that is three-to-one in favour of joining the EU'.

Whether or not this means may be thinking about how to re-engage with the , rejoining, of course, is not something we can just wish to happen, the EU would need to agree & that willingness is hardly a foregone conclusion!

"An operator of a messaging service wishing to introduce an advanced security feature would now have to first let the Home Office [UK] know in advance."

Secure IT systems prevent fraud in commercial transactions and protect our private lives from undue intrusions.

If the UK government were concerned about national security, they’d want to encourage (rather than delay) security updates or end to end encryption.

@openrightsgroup I'm coming to the conclusion that there are a lot of sleeper agents in the UK government actively working to destroy the country, incompetence just isn't plausible any more. Like they must know that they and their friends and families have to use these as well.. Or they just have so much money that they don't care if banking software is secure or not? They cannot be that ignorant?

The only thing at our disposal that regulates the is a plant.

If every landowner of this planet planted more plants, we would be able to measure the effects of this

Don't forget to add a little compost to make the plant happy.

Yes, it is up to every person to fix our planet. Companies are not here for charity or the issue would have already been fixed.

econads,
@econads@chaos.social avatar

@compost but we can't do this by ourselves. We need system change. Vote, write, protest, whatever you can do, but plant too, it keeps the despair away.

Normally when we post patents, they're late 19th/early 20th century objects for interfacing with vaginas.

This is neither, but we're going to tell you about it anyway.

This is the Apparatus For Facilitating The Birth Of A Child By Centrifugal Force, patented in 1965.

State of the Web, circa 2023:

“Would you like to use the browser by Company X, or the browser by the company that survives on half-a-billion dollars a year from Company X, or the browser by the company that gets paid an estimated $20 billion a year by Company X even though it can survive without it?”

We desperately need a web browser by an independent organisation funded by EU taxpayer money and maintained for the common good.

@aral yeah the EU that's currently working on banning end to end encryption? Noo thank you. I know they gave us GDPR too, it's bizarre.

Look at the sky full of stars. ⭐

But what if those stars were drones, programmed to create a breathtaking light show?

Last year, on , 400 drones lit up the sky over Toulouse to celebrate the EU's unity and diversity.

The display was spectacular, reminding us of technology's power to bring people together.

Our new European Drone Strategy 2.0 ensures their safe use and sets a roadmap for the future of drones in Europe, from emergency services to air mobility solutions.

A video showing Lightworks over the sky of Toulouse as seen from a drone. Beethoven's 9th Symphony – the European anthem – accompanies the video.
