@redegelde meta is joining the fedi, most admins are bootlicking and almost to the point of having under the blanket meetings with the corporation and signing NDAs
free-market, just like openweb, without any communal regulation or federating governance, welcomes colonial and capitalist incursions into communal safe spaces.
this is also the difference, i suppose, between FOSS and OSS.
No for real though, where the fuck are indians on the #internet ? reddit? twitter (fuck that demographic of indians) ? facebook ?
I do know that a huge chunk of indians are on #instagram, but what the fuck? why are there so many less of us here on the fedi? the #tumblr side is just mostly bollywood or soap opera stuff which im not really into, so...
They didn’t even put up a fight. It was just, “Everyone else is doing it, let’s join the bandwagon by holding a candlelight vigil by making this sub private for a few days. Just so we aren’t left out.” Eye wash, as I commented elsewhere.
My impression is that the fediverse at the admin level is not handling this particularly well. Most of the big instance admins have been pretty clear to their credit ... they'll federate, and some are likely in direct contact with meta already.
Beyond that though, the vibe seems to be to "wait and see". And so, little discussion.
In reality, I suspect, it is seen as nervously dire: either you federate or risk becoming part of a fringe "radical" network.
@maegul are instances admins being clear? Most of the responses in @smallpatatas’s poll at https://mstdn.patatas.ca/@smallpatatas/110533043724390295 say admins haven’t asked or told people what they’ll do. We know because we’re actively tracking it (and asking them) but most people have better things to do with their time
And we’ll see but I don’t think it’ll be just a “radical fringe” who doesn’t federate with Meta. Time will tell!
#lemmy is a weird project. While the software is fantastic, the development team is heavily endorsing of genocidal propaganda (yogthos ahem) on their main instance and neglectful of who they list on their join-lemmy page as well, as theyve openly listed an indian #islamaphobic/ #queerphobic instance called bakchodi.
What would the #legal situation look like for member #privacy if #meta 's new #fediverse instance is found to be extracting data from instances that have defedareted from them?
@edendestroyer
Technically it's likely that Meta (or anybody else) could harvest a lot of data without consent.
As far as I know instance blocking isn't defined in the #ActivityPub standard. And an added wrinkle is that many instances don't publish their block list so even if instance publishes that they've blocked Meta, other instances might not respect that.
@jdp23@edendestroyer@riptari@lilianedwards@andreamm I would need to look at the spec, as I don’t know what happens if Server A degenerates Server B, but someone on Server B mentions someone on Server A. If that still works, then someone on a Server B could put the personal data of someone on Server A onto Server B.
#MastIndia : is it possible for people still on #Bigsocial (such as instagram) to try and get the indian LGBTQ+ community pages on there to also set up pages on #pixelfed and #mastodon and help them understand the #fedi ?
@edendestroyer@mastodonindians i was literally offering to do it, but no the teens server gave the reason, that only i would be using that, and one person is not enough to moderate at matrix side, and especially being a queer group, it would be subject to more trolls. I regret that I didn't do it during my time as an admin and moderator at teens server (in my non-foss phase, when i didnt use to care about FOSS and stuff)
@snott@edendestroyer Same protocol, but would I need an account on a different server? With email, I can use different email clients with the same account, all talking IMAP. I can play with different email clients without changing my address, so no one I communicate with has to do anything differently to keep in touch. How would this experience compare if I were to experiment with #calckey (or other #fediverse projects), or use a #mastodon client on my phone and a #calckey client elsewhere?
@mikelygee@edendestroyer Imagine instagram, twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc etc were all connected and you could have account on the service you prefer and from there, access the users of all the other services and their contents. That’s how fediverse is.
In fediverse there is mastodon, calckey, pixelfed(like instagrams), peertube(like YouTube), etc etc. each specialized for something.
