TIL the etymology of the English word "thing:"

"A thing was a governing assembly in early Germanic society. Things took place at regular intervals, usually at prominent places that were accessible by travel. They provided legislative functions, as well as being social events and opportunities for trade. In modern usage, the meaning of this word has shifted to mean not just an assemblage but simply an object of any sort."

How am I only learning this today?

ephzero,

@jameshowell Okay, I am utterly shocked. I majored in linguistics and German language, and yet I've never heard of this before. HOW?!?!?!

I get unreasonably annoyed when asked for a "driver's license" when identification is what's required. Guess what country I live in.

Still restless ... maybe I'll tinker with @randomgeek 's NANO-based config. 🤔 https://randomgeekery.org/config/emacs/nano/

ephzero,

@dekkzz76 @randomgeek

I will buy ALL of your yaks, can't resist that kind of sale!

ephzero, to emacs

Getting antsy ... I haven't messed with my config in quite some time. Even tempted to nuke it for no good reason at all ... but I won't. 😅

My T-shirt arrived while I was away. Love it!

The past two weeks have been among the most bizarre in my life. Let's just leave it at that.

ephzero,

@publicvoit Thank you, I am. Now, anyway. :)

ephzero,

@publicvoit I couldn't explain it even if I tried. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Got the new version of installed on my . Neon is just a touch too heavy for the hardware in the Mark2. I've heard you can upgrade the Pi to a model with more RAM and supposedly that makes a huge difference. If you can get a Pi. I'm hoping when they get around to a Pi 5 :raspberrypi: it'll keep close enough to the same form factor that it can be dropped into the Mark2. It would be really nice to give it a bit more oomph.

ephzero,

@mike

@ggiesen

No, I was running the Neon USB and hoped I'd see improvement with the SSD.

ephzero,

@mike @ggiesen I got the SSD with hopes of a speed improvement, but I found no difference. I've actually gone back to an original Mycroft USB for now. I guess I have a nice external SSD for music files now :shrug_tone1:

ephzero,

@mike @ggiesen It certainly boots faster, but response times seem the same. This is subjective; I haven't measured it. I don't have a lot of troubleshooting time at the moment, so I'm not investigating further for now. I'm sure I'll give it another try later.

If you think someone is sealioning in your replies, check if they might be autistic before tearing them a new one.

For those of us for whom asking questions is not just necessary, but a sign of genuine engagement, getting rebuked is a lifelong trauma. Schoolteachers thinking you’re a little shit, peers thinking you’re obnoxious or dumb, bosses and bureaucrats thinking you’re insolent.

All we do is ask “why?” because that’s maybe the most beautiful question there is.

ephzero,

@B3r6ur @mnl Okay I do have a question...what is sealioning? This is new to me.

emacs-nox on Beepy! Now I just have to figure out where ctrl is on this keymap...

Well of course there's an I Ching package for Emacs. 😄

Look at the present I got today 😃

That good ol' keyboard sure feels nice.

ephzero,

It's not just the keyboard, it's a device that runs on a Pi Zero W: https://beepy.sqfmi.com/

I never really noticed the bulk Scatter function in before. Goodbye, tasks! I'll deal with you some other day...or just scatter you again when next we meet.

I keep finding old Fediverse profiles that I'd forgotten about. Here's one of my posts from January 2018 from the Wayback Machine, no longer on mstdn.io ...

ephzero, to random

Having a pinned introduction post seems a bit redundant to me when there's already a bio in one's profile. I guess the advantage is that it shows up in feeds when you first post it. Is there anything else?

ephzero, to random

Moved my account over from @ephzero . I re-followed some names that I recognized, but not sure which followers are still active. Give me a shout if I missed you!

ephzero, to random

@lauren The name sounded familiar and now I'm quite sure I remember that motorcycle ... do I remember you from ? ? Or even ? 😛

Who's ready for a little pick-me-up?

ephzero, to random

Po Lu's native Android port of Emacs on my Onyx Boox Note Air; Meko Push keyboard. Love this setup! 😃
