75 kg bench press, long pause.

On March 31st, it’s competition time again!

“Why are you arching your back?”

This is normal in powerlifting, it’s partly to protect the shoulders and partly to reduce the range of motion so you can press more weight. Powerlifting is all about lifting the most weight.

If you care about moving weight safely with movements like squat and deadlift, take it from me, do NOT sleep on single leg exercises like single leg RDL or Bulgarian split squats. These are exercises you can load with decent weight if you'd like, but please understand that they have serious benefits with lighter loads too when you perform the lift with a focus on form and balance.

Worked up to some moderately heavy deadlifts today as part of my gym's fundraiser for Children's Relief Fund 🍉

I haven't deadlifted since 2020 and was a little apprehensive about moving heavy weight after my neurological issues this summer

In 2018 I pulled my all time PR of 405lbs/180kgs after months of prep

Today I pulled 315lbs raw and 355lbs belted with no prior prep whatsoever 😅

I'll be matching the money I raised for PCRF

Recently learned about this really awesome deadlift cue to prep your hips for hinging, and to prime your body to feel tension on hamstrings and glutes while you're performing the lift. I always start with very little or no weight, and this foam roller trick with no weight was great today to cue my hips to move right!

Anyone have similar little things to do before you lift?

The camera is at floor level, looking up towards me as I perform a prep exercise to get primed for deadlift day. I place a foam roller at waist level, and put my hands in front of to and hold it to my body. As I hinge with my hips and think "butt back" I roll the foam roller down my thighs and reinforce a feeling of tension on my glutes and hamstrings as I stand upright

Cheers ✌️

💪 Peeps Power!

😮 71-year-old Peeps Nicol has been speaking to Tony Livesey about becoming a competitive powerlifter.

⬇️ She started lifting after she lost her husband and was diagnosed with MS. She can now deadlift 55lbs – or the weight of a Hector's dolphin!

Had the joy of opening my to some friends for Strong Tea, a tea party! True to name we sipped tea and lifted heavy shit! We had a range of experiences from gym rats to total novices. It was fun to show some barbell-curious people (of all body sizes and genders) how to do the main lifts safely in a fun and non-intimidating environment.

I decided to make a plate loadable dumbbell that's hard to grip and which I can load to more than I can pick up. 2" A513 tubing (1/16" wall thickness), shaft collars. Another day I'm going to load this to ludicrous weight but I'll mostly just use it for rows and curls and maybe eventually some other nonsense while developing grip a la Fat Gripz

Most of the effort was just filing the ends smooth.
