🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 Hello Canadians looking for Canadian news (especially if you’ve been dependent on Facebook or Instagram links).

CBC has created an index of Canadian news media which is searchable by location. It brings up an interesting pot-pourri of digital, tv and radio sources although you can search for just one. There’s a French version as well.

I’ve already discovered some new (to me) small newspapers from nearby regions 😃

I fell asleep in a dark, wet evening and woke up early this morning to this winter wonderland.
When I first opened my eyes it reminded me of that moment when Lucy steps through the wardrobe into Narnia ❄️

My 8 year old grandson just built his own haven to help insects survive our harsh Quebec winter. He dug a shallow hole in the ground, mounded up the earth and leaves for insulation and created a brick and log barrier with a break for the insects to walk through 😃 He’s very drawn to the outdoors. If there is such a thing as “Naturalistic Intelligence” (see Gardner, Multiple Intelligences) he’s got it. 😃

My garden near Montreal, Quebec on February 10th. Temperature - 10 degrees Celsius. Snow cover - minimal.

With the decreasing snow in recent years I think I’m going to have to rethink my garden practices. I’ve always counted on a thick blanket of snow to protect my perennials from extreme cold and from the early Spring freeze/thaws.
I miss the snow ❄️.

I just had such a fascinating morning. I live in Chateauguay on Montreal’s South Shore and my property was chosen to be one location for the Montreal Seismic Monitoring Project.
Prof. Yajing Liu and her assistant buried a small seismograph in my front yard. It has a lithium battery in the top. The other pointy end screws off when the team wants to access the data once it’s collected.

February the 28th, Chateauguay (Montreal), The view out my window.
Just shy of 15 degrees Celsius for the 2nd day in a row and not a speck of snow left in my backyard - just a little melting slush at one end of my pond.
Usual temperature in February = maximum -1 degree Celsius

This is the mural Chez Nous by Québec artist Cecile Gariepy which you can catch just a glimpse of when you run along the Decarie Expressway.
I love this mural for itself but also for the fact that it celebrates the building of social housing.

I heard about this activity suggested by @JamesGarden where you post one photograph a month of a specific place in your garden.
I think it’s a great idea and I’ve chosen this little snow-covered corner of my backyard where my husband and I dug a small pond 2 years ago.
The pond has become a symbol for us of how we are developing our property to better welcome wildlife.
I’m Evelyn and I’m gardening in zone 6a near , Quebec.

There’s such an amazing amount of well written and thoughtful work on the internet and about a year ago I found a great resource to widen my reading and introduce me to some new magazines I’d never have found on my own.
“Longreads” is a curated collection of articles from a variety of perspectives. They have collections built around quirky themes like “Cryptids” as well as topics like gardening and each week there’s a “Top Picks of the Week”.

Today I learned about Earth Overshoot Day which is the day in a given year when “the world as a whole is exceeding its renewable biocapacity” (see W_Lucht@mstdn.social)
For the 🌍 that day falls on August 2nd. For 🇨🇦 it’s a shocking March 13th. March 13th! Let that sink in.

I think we Canadians need to do more. And quickly. There’s no time to lose.

Halfway through February and I'm calling it: we have not had enough precipitation to stave off the extreme drought our Alberta government warned us of in late December and it's a good bet we once again skip directly from our winter, such as it was, directly to summer, giving last year's worst wildfire season in recorded history a run for its money.

After @makershour this week I decided I really do need to figure out how to have somewhere to make things.

So I found a table on Facebook marketplace (for free!) and am picking it up on Tuesday.

I'm going to have to shuffle my room around a bit to make it work but fingers crossed it works out!

evelyntheriault,
@evelyntheriault@canada.masto.host avatar

@alexisbushnell @makershour it’s amazing how inspiring it is to have even a little space for making. I think the act of creating space is kind of a commitment to ourselves as creators. Good luck with working that out, Alexis.

Ants Canada (Mikey Bustos) is the largest "Ant YouTuber" and now and then someone finds out I like ants and says "oh you should watch Ants Canada." (which is kind of like suggesting that serious foodie "check out Iron Chef") -- If you go into the "online ant-keeping community" you'll find a surprising amount of antipathy for Bustos, is it jealousy? Serious professional disagreements? It always seemed odd to me but I think I know why this is happening. It's three main factors: 1/

@futurebird I love, love, love Mastodon. Only here could I have found out that there’s an online ant community and that they’re having issues and also that there are people that would keep red ants as pets.
Mastodon is endlessly fascinating because of people like you

I’ve just finished my first solo puzzle after not doing any (except family Christmas ones) in more than a decade.
I found this new-to-me puzzle maker called Cobble Hill. I really like their selection - although if memory serves me righ the Ravensburger puzzles click together in a more satisfying way.
Anyways, I’ll be definitely starting a new one during the dark, cold days of February.
