These are the statements made by US politicians in 2019 regarding Hong Kong, when rioters were burning police cars, throwing Molotov cocktails.

@yogthos we have a “Proximity Rule” of Politics, in which the further away from the situation, the more forceful and principled the response.

Biggest positive takeaways from the line 2 opening:

  • The Master planned development near stations (Overlake and Spring District) is genuinely good.
  • The Spring District shallow station is awesome

Biggest negative takeaways:

  • the at grade stuff -- intersections and pedestrian access -- is extremely bad
  • Blows my mind how much parking is surrounding the stations.
  • Using highway adjacent right-of-ways is a disaster for the lines usefulness

Five years ago, I volunteered a shift at the community bike shop and a grandma came in with her 9yo granddaughter looking for training wheels. I put her on the back of the tandem and did a few laps of the parking lot to build her confidence, them I took the pedals off a BMX and sent her out for a few more laps before putting them back on. Her grandma told me, as she watched her pedal around happily, that it was one of her best life memories.

Q8. What are common complaints drivers make about people who cycle/bike lanes/etc?

(Added by me: are they valid? Why or why not?)

fbaum,

@ascentale A8. I haven’t read through all the great answers, but to answer the second part: no! The most common grumps I hear are downright ludicrous. Time to bust out the excellent https://CyclingFallacies.com/

OKAY. Stopping point on the Northshore Bike Map, connecting the latest Seattle and brand new Eastside map.

I've added everything I know and I've stumbled upon a bunch of things I didn't before. This has been educational.

I've also labelled a bunch of stuff, added replacement labels for certain attractions that had their labels obscured, and made a couple of corrections.

I'm not including the sidewalk/path hybrid along Ballinger because while sometimes it sure does feel like a path most of the time it's just "sidewalk."

DO YOU KNOW ROUTES I DON'T?

Tell me about them! But only if they're public. I've not included a couple of trails here because they're private.

What in the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim yeah we're in Anaheim but nod-nod wink-wink think of us as LA but we're the red one not the blue one but we're better because we have Ohtani wait what do you mean he's a Dodger now whatever bro we're still claiming LA" is going on here?

@mekkaokereke This happened here, too! “Everett's Paine Field changes name to Seattle Paine Field International Airport” (Everett is 30 miles from Seattle, and Paine is 40 miles from our main and larger airport… easily an hour in traffic if someone gets confused by this😖)

We have a music question from @pete ! This is timely for me, because our playlist needs a refresh.

Q3. You're only allowed one choice, so which bike-related track are you gonna add to a playlist?

@pete is kicking things off with 'Bike Rider' by Mungo's Hi-Fi. https://youtu.be/4oUxPWnrXNk

cc: @forteller who asked a similar question.

Welcome to our BikeNite for the week of March 8th! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Feel free to answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.
We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? How are you feeling at the moment?

fbaum,
@fbaum@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@ascentale A1. Lynnwood, north of Seattle, WA, USA. Feeling good as I finally got a regular(-ish!) sized bike that fits me – and is still unique. Plus I found cool stuff on the first ride!

It's an Orbea Katu mini velo with a frame-mounted basket, 20" wheels, IGH, fenders, dynamo lights, and hydraulic disc brakes!🚲🌈🐮

Q6. What is the best looking bike shop or bike related business you've ever been in and why (even if the people were jerks or you never want to go back for whatever reason)? What was the vibe it gave off? Bonus points for pictures!

For the past 10-15 years, we've had a pair of Ortlieb classic Back Roller panniers (40 liter capacity). They've been good to us, and gotten plenty of use, but there's two of us and only two of them. My wife & I share them, and have used other crappier panniers for a time, but those things are just rock solid and great.

I decided to take advantage of a Black Friday sale and order another pair, since she often uses both when she goes to work. Fedex delivered them to some other random place.

Language, Thought and Reality
Selected Writings of Benjamin Lee Whorf

The pioneering linguist Benjamin Whorf (1897–1941) grasped the relationship between human language and human thinking: how language can shape our innermost thoughts. His basic thesis is that our perception of the world and our ways of thinking about it are deeply influenced by the structure of the languages we speak.

In 2013 I wrote a short (Chinese) article on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that talked about misinformation, anger, and the power of potent symbols. It was one of my very first articles that were published in a newspaper.

In 2023 I’m seeing all the same things happening again, and I’m seeing people saying the exact same things I’ve said ten years ago.

Read this thread, it’s a good read & made the same points as I did:
