The monthly update was published ✨ It is a high level overview of the project activities.

A UI team was created by Forgejo contributors who have been at work for months on the necessary backports of bug fixes. More ambitious discussions started on the strategies to improve the codebase and the User eXperience. Forgejo needs help to triage. If you ever create a new issue, take a moment of your time to also look at a few others.

Progress update: Half way through the migration of all our repositories from GitHub to our self-hosted @forgejo 🤩.

While the physical files are getting transferred, I took the time to create Forgejo runners on all older Macs at the office, so it can run "practically-instant" workflows for both ARM and x86 stuffs including iOS and macOS 😍.

konstantin,

@floby @forgejo We wanted a tool that's open and community driven (with no "for profit" entity behind it). We prefer to donate or contribute directly to a project, maybe even take part in its governance. That's opposed to services which come with a long TOS explaining how they'd monetise our code in ways we don't expect. Forgejo is a fork of Gitea for similar reasons and it also happens to be very lightweight and easy to setup. I hope that we can stick with it for a couple of years, at least 😅.

Forgejo forks its own path forward 🚀

Forgejo started as a soft fork of Gitea. Over time, it developed its own identity, adopted both development and governance practices - to ensure the stability, quality, and openness of the project - that made it more challenging to remain a soft fork. In early 2024, a decision was made to become a hard fork, and for Forgejo to forge its own path going forward. This post explains the consequences this decision will have.

We are excited about @forgejo becoming a hard fork, and trust the maintainers to double down on their commitment to a secure and reliable software forge. It was a pleasure to work with in the past year, and we thank everyone involved for turning the fork into a successful project.

Friends of Mastodon, or ?
Why ?

I am aware of the difference between the two and why Forgejo exists but I'm interested in your opinion.

Thanks !

@rfc2549 You can find our opinion here: https://blog.codeberg.org/codeberg-launches-forgejo.html

After this year, we can say that Forgejo is probably the best thing that could happen to us. A friendly community, awesome support, and improved collaboration on important topics like Performance and Security are the key points for us.

There is not much difference from a technical side right now, but we think that the Forgejo project stands for trust and stability.

the forgejo dev chat is so nice!! soo glad to be able to help at all, i was disappointed having seen that old gitea issue from years ago about adding pronouns just closed and locked and now it seems like it could not just make it to forgejo but maybe even gitea too!

imagine if GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, etc federated with each other. being able to follow any repo hosted on any site, opening issues, committing and opening PR's...

Looks like we have a lot of awesome accessibility improvements in the latest update of Forgejo from @forgejo when using a screen reader.

The changes for the editor are certainly refreshing, as a result the wiki is usable now. The dashboard is cleaned up, we don't see lots of unneeded images (and I really mean lots), the navigation links to switch to the subsequent pages when one has multiple repositories can be accessed now, dropdowns seem more stable (although still not perfect), issues are a breeze to manage, and lots more.

A lot of this comes from Gitea, and I am definitely happy to see things moving finally, especially knowing that this is the only feature-complete lightweight git solution that runs on a Raspberry Pi.

I've been using a self-hosted @forgejo and have found it to be full featured, generally trouble free, and doesn't take much to run. Even on my tiniest possible server, it's much snappier than GitHub.
