From @andyjayhawk of :

Truck bloat is killing us, new crash data reveals

"How tall are we talking here? According to the IIHS, the average US passenger vehicle has gotten about four inches wider, 10 inches longer, eight inches taller, and 1,000 pounds heavier over the past 30 years. Many vehicles are more than 40 inches tall at the leading edge of the hood. And on some large pickups, the hoods are almost at eye level for many adults."

This is apparently an internal Automattic memo making the rounds on Tumblr, indicating that they’ve failed to get Tumblr activity/revenue up since its 2019 acquisition and it will now be maintained by a skeleton crew of Trust & Safety and support folks, with the majority of its 139 employees moving to other projects inside Automattic.

@andybaio If this means tumblr will stop pushing the sketchy tumblr live junk on the home screen, I might be okay with this.

The latest Urbanist Agenda podcast is really, REALLY good. Jason Slaughter of @notjustbikes and Doug Gordon of @TheWarOnCars have a really interesting conversation, and they make you wish you could grab beers with them too.

The podcast is already out on , so if you subscribe (and you should) you can check it out, or you can wait until it drops in the general feed.

It may not be what @pluralistic had in mind when he wrote it, but it's hard to read his piece "In defense of bureaucratic competence" without thinking of how America used to build massive public works projects and thousands of miles of rail across the country, and how it now can't even build out a mid-sized city's public transit system without relying on pricey contractors and consultants.

What is a popular artist or band that you think gets unfairly criticized?

My pick is Miley Cyrus, despite growing up a Disney kid with celebrity parents, living under a media microscope, and being skewed by basically everyone for showing human sexuality, she's seemed to turn out alright, and if you're going to tell me she can't sing, you're a liar.

But not quite as good as the Dolly version slowed to 33rpm. That song deserves to be sad and slow.

@curiousdoc @RickiTarr I'm still waiting for a definitive version of Persuasion, but I do like the Amanda Root version with Ciaran Hinds. The Sally Hawkins version is okay, I like her performance (The Dakota Johnson version wasn't as bad as I feared, but it was intentionally stupid.)

The full-on genocide of the Rohingya kicked off when Rohingya insurgents targeted Burmese security posts and murdered a bunch of civilians, after which Myanmar's military murdered tens of thousands of Rohingya civilians as part of an ethnic-cleansing operation that left 700K+ Rohingya people traumatized and displaced. About half of them children.

The mayor of NYC is going to South America on a "fact finding mission," to understand why migrants are here.

What will happen when he discovers that one of the biggest drivers is climate change? Will he then come back and be all in on the Green New Deal? Or will absolutely nothing change, and he'll still ask people to come back into the office, commuting unnecessarily, just to prop up commercial real estate prices?

Climate changes. Crops fail. People go hungry. People start walking North.

The continues apace. Semi-RIP, – I hope we're proven wrong about this, but it sure doesn't /look/ good.

Literally no idea where I’d get cool new tracks if they go down the toilet, a ton of what I consume on BC are independent musicians who don't or can't distribute on the big (also, often shitty consumer experience) stores.

And before you ask, NO, music rental (aka "streaming”) does not fucking count.

@bitprophet I had never heard of Songtradr, I have no trust basis with that entity. But I have to admit that Epic did absolutely zero with Bandcamp when it bought it, the site and service and apps remain the same, you still can't even make so much as a playlist on the website. It could be so much better, and I'll give the new owner at least a chance to do that before I jump ship.

We literally cannot afford our current transportation system. And this study doesn't even count the larger cost of road maintenance.

Via : "The average annual cost of ownership is up more than 13 percent from last year to more than $12,000, or just over $1,000 a month, according to the latest research from the automobile owners group AAA. Higher car prices and the surging costs of financing, insuring and maintaining a new car all contributed to the increase."

@enobacon @danlyke Not just stupid—although American consumers have indeed been hoodwinked by the auto industry—but desperate and lacking options. Most Americans don't have access to safe alternatives. I don't want to call workers stupid who are just trying to get work that will let them survive or enjoy a modest standard of living, and I just want to show them how much better it could be for them if they didn't have to pay for and maintain a luxury item like a car.

Ooff, I need all the gears, it's too hilly where I live to get away with only 5 gears. I have 7 gears on the rear derailleur of my ebike, and on the rare occasions when I've run out of juice, the lowest gear isn't enough to get up over the hills. If I lived in a flatter area I might agree with you.
