mostly the same as this name anywhere — fascinated by earth and related-science. So far this is more of a science account and the sfba one is more of a personal account, but there will always be sloppy overlap.

Montrose Search and Rescue: "Today, our team responded to a vehicle over the side call on Angeles Forest Hwy at MM 19.36. The vehicle was about 300' over the side. By the time our unit arrived on scene, the patient had self-extricated and was on the roadway. The roadway was wet and slick. This weekend, we have had two other weather-related calls. One hiker was suffering from exposure in the snow and two cyclists needed to be rewarmed by us. When the weather is excessively cold, hot, windy, rainy, etc, please reconsider your plans to visit the wilderness. "

geographile,

@croyle @mjausson @ai6yr I'd go from the east side or not at all. There are lovely hiking trails all over the east bay, no need to climb that one. (Even if I could anymore, but I can't. )

geographile,

@ai6yr this morning in Fremont, we had a 911 call from Mission Peak (Alameda County), someone who was apparently injured too badly to walk the muddy trail. Turns out they were simply mired, it was too muddy to walk. The ATVs they sent from two different directions couldn't deal with the mud. The helicopter couldn't land close enough. I should probably look for an update, I have no idea how they got down. But I'm thinking hikers should turn around as soon as the mud seems to be a bit much.

geographile,

@ai6yr they're okay, were extricated by helicopter. This involved more than two hours, three Fremont fire engine companies, a battalion chief, and the East bay regional park district helicopter and crew.

Please don't go hiking when the trails are that muddy. Turn around and go back.

geographile,

@croyle @mjausson @ai6yr look at all that lovely unshaded trail!

“The linguistic evidence is consistent with two population strata defined by early coastal entries ~24,000 and ~15,000 years ago, then an inland entry stream beginning ~14,000 ff. and mixed coastal/inland ~12,000 ff. The dominant structural properties among the founder languages are still reflected in the modern linguistic populations” https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ajpa.24923

Imagine someone telling you that due to a law from 1864, you have to risk your life during pregnancy even though it’s 2024, and medicine has advanced to solve that potential problem.

Who in the hell in the name of juice decided that pumpkin, carrot and beetroot juices would taste good

Hugz & xXx

geographile,

@ordrad @melissabeartrix I have a friend who thinks beetroot tastes like dirt, too. I don't at all. Maybe it's like how some folks think coriander or rau răm taste like soap.

I wouldn't put beet in a margarita, I think they really need something citrusy or at least citrus-adjacent.

Just noticed there's no 13th row on this plane. I'd booked 14A, but someone accidentally took my seat so I'm in 12A. Seems like row 14 is actually row 13. This deception cannot be hidden from the gods.

geographile,

@tsherrygeo there are buildings in NYC without a 13th floor. That's for people who don't want bad luck

Big round swirling thing off the California coast... the "tail" part on the right lower side is where the rain shows up... you can see it's only starting to get to Santa Barbara around now.

geographile,

@ai6yr the radar is so weird up here, rain cells are just growing out of nowhere within the mass of instability. Weather nerd heaven.

Old forests critically important for slowing climate change, merit immediate protection from logging

Forests reduce the buildup carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 30% each year...

@YMItalking @melissabeartrix I tried to explain that to my kid today while we were flying on a short flight, and he thought it was nuts. I definitely remember when restaurants first got non-smoking areas. Of course we never sat in them.

I'm expecting/hoping for another wave of folks over here as requiring the paid to vote in polls and eliminating legacy blue checks hits Twitter. will die otherwise.

amazing how flare affects mindful social media use. It only occasionally touches clicky clicky Twitter but when I'm sore and want to use mastodon carefully it's hard. is really hard on executive function.
