The broom closet ending was my favorite.

I do a bunch of Go (at work), a bit of Rust (for fun), deeply enjoy teaching and learning, and looove that I get paid to work on open source. Concurrency and dependency nutjob.

I'm pretty sparse with toots and boosts, and I promise not to flood your feed because I'm not fond of it myself. (Corollary: if I unfollow you, it doesn't mean I don't like your posts! I just read literally everything and so I have to prune aggressively, and can't handle volume)

…or maybe it will take up a meaning of “utterly destroying a useful thing for sheer greed”.

@thomasfuchs "it has been googled" has become semi-common around me for "shut down despite being decent", if that counts

A long time ago, the worst project manager I ever worked with tried to get involved in a technical decision around database choice.

See, he had a set of demands that he told us were absolute requirements and in his eye this data store solved those problems neatly.

Except.

We talked to the people who worked on said database and we were not just a little outside of the parameters where they made such guarantees, we were way outside of what they were built for.

This was a recurring theme.

groxx,
@groxx@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna one of my "favorite" personal experiences around this:
We had a heavily-funded team dead set on having all of:

  • global (literally) write availability of all data at all times
  • less than 20ms latency at all times
  • always available
  • strict serializable consistency
  • on a Cassandra-backed system

And would absolutely not take "that's impossible", not just "no" as an answer. They just kept pointing to systems that said "yes" and demanding we build the same ability.

A large contingent of webdevs seem to think that fast means “best-case fast.”

“Our web sites are fast on expensive hardware and from reliable fiber networks.”

Worst-case fast is a much more meaningful, impressive, and inclusive claim to make! Fast on low-end hardware. Fast on slow networks.

Fast on the World Wide Web—not just from a WeWork in Silicon Valley.

groxx,
@groxx@hachyderm.io avatar

@zachleat worst-case fast also gets you an unbelievably amazing experience on the best-case stuff.

I love using low end hardware to build things. You find out what hurts your end result FAR earlier, when you're more easily able to fix it. And then the final result absolutely screams on decent machines, and that's an amazing feeling.

An ask since we're now seeing "Software Engineering AI" (I have multiple opinions here, but I digress):

Don't personify it

Don't refer to "Devin's code" or any other possessive without some form of demarcation like quotation marks. Don't talk about it like it wrote the code in question (more properly it generated it). Don't refer to it as "Devin" as if it were a name

Call it "the Devin software" or "the Devin tool." Create linguistic separation.

It seems minor, but it helps.

groxx,
@groxx@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna I might accept "Devin's full of shit, listens poorly, doesn't learn from mistakes, and we should fire them"

I'm trying out Backblaze for backups, and setup an encryption key. Turns out if you ever use the “View/Restore Files" feature on their website, they send the full encryption key to their remote server.

Which completely and absolutely defeats the point of the encryption key, because now they have a copy of the encryption key.

groxx, (edited )
@groxx@hachyderm.io avatar

@thisismissem yeah, this is what made me concerned about backblaze when I was storage/backup hunting. Deeply problematic design.

I've kinda come to the conclusion that all backup systems suck and are horrifically predatory and largely don't even work beyond "can store some* files". It's utterly insane.

@rakyat cheese curds are mostly a Wisconsin thing, and to a lesser extent Minnesota and Canada (mostly as part of poutine). In Wisconsin they're just regularly a thing you can get in grocery stores, often made the same day and still squeaky: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese_curd

You can kinda find them in surrounding states, but Wisconsin is properly obsessed with them, and cheese in general :)

today's thought is:

talking to LLMs is just like reading most traditional search engine results nowadays, except you actually get to pick the prompt, instead of some SEO expert

groxx,
@groxx@hachyderm.io avatar

@fasterthanlime yeah, because the majority of the Internet hasn't been trying to manipulate LLMs.

Yet, anyway. We're also just not very skilled yet at doing it even when we try. If they remain big, I would assume that'll change.
