Who am I? Shouty SF reader, amateur radio tinkerer, dormant astronomy geek, he him.

Being a dual US/UK citizen really gives you a front row to all the strange little cultural differences between the two nations. For instance, tomorrow in the U.K. is a national holiday to celebrate the time we stopped a fella who tried to end democracy by force, but when that happened in the US they gave the guy a CNN town hall special, so weird lol.

@SecureOwl Nope, we don't get 5th Nov as a national holiday.

Just reached the 3rd Doctor in my Doctor Who rewatch and MY GOD does it reinforce my love for Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

The perfect military officer. Strong sense of duty. Utterly fearless. Accepts that science matters, even if he doesn't understand it and the guy pushing it is a bit of a dick.

19 years ago today, Battlestar Galactica started (excluding the opening 2003 miniseries) with "33", one of the best episodes of the show.

"Every 33 minutes, the ragtag fleet of human survivors make a jump to a new location. And every 33 minutes, the Cylons manage to find them."

A tense day for William Adama and Saul Tigh
A view of the ragtag fleet of human survivors, where no one has been able to sleep for several days due to the relentless pursuit of the Cylons.

About that last RT: I think this is the first ever use of a laser anti-missile weapon in combat. The implications for future conflicts are immense as it shifts the offense/defense slider a long way back towards defense (war fighting has been dominated by offensive technologies since 1918: a tool for reliably zapping artillery shells and missiles in flight will be a game-changer).

Finally SF made real.

I can't remember whose book it was - there was an war SF/thriller about a war in 21st century (obviously written in late 90s) which had laser weapons suddenly unleashed to an unsuspecting aircraft crew, blinding almost all of them etc. etc.
I guess it wasn't the only one.

1980s Starwars was just to break this deadlock, and then we didn't have the technology.

We might have it now (although I presume that would require significantly more powerful lasers).
