Another night of waking every hour or so. I guess technically it’s my birthday now. Happy birthday me, I made to 50, who’d have thought. Once again I feel absolutely fine during the night, neither up nor down. The Goldilocks zone 😁

Well I slept 11 hours with pharma help which is a big relief. My mood is good but I’ve got a little edge of anxiety. I will communicate with my PhD supervisors today, but I’m not going to work - it is less than 24 hours since I felt suicidal, I need to be gentle with myself. It’s been happening to me for decades but I still can’t get over how my moods can just flip almost instantaneously. It’s very wet here but I’m going out anyway to try and walk off my anxious edge. How are all of you this Monday morning?

@purplepadma rain, rain, endless rain! I have a new electric bicycle, excellent since I'm suffering from long COVID and it whizzes me along as if by magic :-)

Excited to discover today that in Python bool("True") is True but so is bool("False") !

I was trying to do a type conversion by measuring the type of an example value and using the coercion function to convert a provided string.

Any views on Ruff as a formatter/linter for ?

I currently use black, pylint, flake8

Ruff looks really interesting but I'm concerned it is open source/free to use now but will become commercial in the future

If I could change one thing about education, it would be to change every example of for i in ... to something more meaningful (for number in ...) so that people would stop writing things like for i in employees:

ianhopkinson,
@ianhopkinson@mastodon.social avatar

@nedbat I'd stop calling "dictionaries" dictionaries because the unique feature of a dictionary are that its entries are ordered and in a Python dictionary they are not!

    @jynersolives yes, that's right - at Castle Sol! I'm currently tidying up catacombs and caves I missed earlier, and playing with various Ash of War. My son gained great entertainment from killing the same four soldiers outside Stormveil with everything single weapon I had!

    @treyhunner I follow the hash tag on Mastodon! Also I signed up to get digest emails from the PEP discussion board which gives a good insight into where the language itself is going - this is a result of a blog posts I wrote on pyproject.toml and setup.py and type-hinting where I found the PEPs were the best reference material

    I don't find for very attractive. It is an old style, and the file based config of pages, all though semi-intuative for an experienced code, can be tedious and less eeadable than a standard page.

    My question is, is seen is being still very slow, and would it be a good choice for a front-end local app? Should I even go this route, or should I maybe just go with for the front end and for the backend?

    I would like to give a front-end side for my vots I am writing, which would allow users to easily see metrics and interact with the bot if they choose not to write any custom code.

    Of course, it would be preferable for it to be OS agnostic, but it will akyway run in due to the database running in a docker compose.

    @Stark9837 @Python if I want a Python GUI I make a Flask app. I switched to doing this 10 years or so ago - I found none of the GUI libraries particularly attractive/satisfying/sustainable

    I'm finishing the revision on my next nonfiction book, which is a heavily-researched exploration of how the weapons of psychological war show up in culture wars. It's a popular book, not academic. I have a zillion footnotes. Should I:

    @annaleen @anarchosynthism I dislike footnotes because I'm completist and get easily distracted into side quests with them! I'm fairly sure endnotes are standard practice for popular non-fiction these days.

    In brainstorming mode. Open to any suggestions from Shiny friends. 😊

    ianhopkinson,
    @ianhopkinson@mastodon.social avatar

    @tanya_shapiro a pattern I often use in Python is to put data in sqlite databases and query it there. I think DuckDB would serve similarly. This shifts load from memory to disk. sqlite and DuckDB are exceedingly efficient at what they are designed to be efficient at.

    I finally spent some time figuring out a minimal way of developing and packaging a Python library using a pyproject.toml file

    It turns out you can do it with just a pyproject.toml file - no setup.py, no setup.cfg - and the only tools you need are pip and build, with no need to use Poetry/Hatch/Flit/etc for the simplest case

    https://til.simonwillison.net/python/pyproject

    ianhopkinson,
    @ianhopkinson@mastodon.social avatar

    @simon I've been playing with this too. I note dropping setup.py means using the relatively new, 3rd party(?) build module which would make me nervous I would prefer to keep a minimal setup.py. My blog post on this is massively popular, clearly a lot of people are trying to understand this: https://ianhopkinson.org.uk/2022/02/understanding-setup-py-setup-cfg-and-pyproject-toml-in-python/
