@Zettelnotizen

"May disrupt" Even a week ago, a russian report was saying that there are literally no movements in the market. But there is evidence that many want the prices to go up.

Needless to remind: crude prices can't go up due to accidents on russian oil refineries. The russia produces internally less gasoline/etc, thus excess of crude is sold on int'l market, thus over-supply. And russia paying hard cash for gasoline/diesel on int'l market... not enough hard cash to move the market.

Recently I learned about the existence of the gaming category „boomer shooter“.

https://www.inverse.com/gaming/boomer-shooter-definition-origin

It’s not a shooter for boomers (I am none) and you don't shoot boomers either (sigh). It's classic shooters like we had in the 90s build with modern means. Sounds fun!

So, I just downloaded Prodeus and had a short round of bloody shooting and exploding zombies (?) to recover from today's teams calls! Should do this regularly as a „Feierabend" ritual. 🔥 #gaming #boomershooter

ifilipau,
@ifilipau@mas.to avatar

@rjayasinghe I'd welcome an entire sub-genre "games without all this slow console bullshit that drags you down".

In the older times (for me ~90s) one could had had so much fun, packed into one hour or less.

Today? An hour is barely enough time to download mandatory update, go through endless splash screens and popups, and then... spend 2 hours in dumb unskippable tutorial.

Forget shooters. Even games like Pacman or Prince have no analogues today. "Having unobstructed fun? Certainly not!"

ifilipau,
@ifilipau@mas.to avatar

@rjayasinghe

Old "Doom" games were always exemplary to me in this aspect: pressing F9 (quick load) already during loading screen would skip menus/etc and drop you ASAP directly into the game. If first time launching: drop into a new game.

A New Front: Ukraine's War on Russian Oil and the Power to Hurt
by
14:25

Over the last month, Ukraine has created a new front: at least ten drone attacks have targeted Russia's oil infrastructure, with substantial damage.

Will this give Ukraine additional leverage?

@elCelio @MarvinTheMartian

It's not that simple, unfortunately. People often miss the fact that most military aid is actual aid (as in free). Few instances became public in the past, when Ukraine asked to buy stuff, but was refused, and received instead as free aid. In other words, for many types of weapons, Western politicians still maintain more controls over what weapons Ukraine receives.

P.S. This is why such deals are very important to Ukraine: https://www.thedefensepost.com/2024/01/04/norway-defense-sale-ukraine/

ifilipau,
@ifilipau@mas.to avatar

@elCelio @MarvinTheMartian

The putin is only a logical product of the NKVD/KGB/FSB system. You need to kill off all of them, destroy the system, to remove the threat. (They are known for hunting "traitors" for decades.)

I just silently hope that at least Ukraine's campaign against russian oil/gas would continue, regardless of global oil/gas prices. Depriving the "KGB mafia state" of funds hopefully would have some positive effect on russia.

ifilipau,
@ifilipau@mas.to avatar

@elCelio @MarvinTheMartian

It can't be a "big taboo" per se, since soviet russia & US did it all the time in 1950s-70s. (Or russia now in Africa.) It's a "taboo" only when "insignificant" countries do it.

P.S. The #2 by the way, I don't understand. Because Ukrainian elites certainly have the means, but we don't see yet any evidence of it happening. (POWs as hostages?) Also: kremlin actually promised to kill only Zelenskyy. Others might have been convinced that they could escape it.

Why can I still not quote post on a platform in the year of our lord 2024?

Mastodon has to let go of the small minority of critics of new features that turn them to shit. Take a look at the GitHub and see what I mean: there are clusters of users who sockpuppet on issues and push for the default experience to remain the same because 'privacy' or 'features will be abused!'.

That can't happen, otherwise Mastodon will die.

And quoted user gets no notification. And quoted user has no control.

P.S. My bigger gripes though are more severe and IMO fatal: (1) no discovery algorithms (note e.g. BlueSky tries smth with external/3rd party lists/discovery) and (2) search for account's posts is disabled by default (you could never find anything for any kind of niche topic). No search, no discovery = everybody is destined to sit (and ferment) in their own tiny info-bubbles.

ifilipau,
@ifilipau@mas.to avatar

@sam @scott

IMO instead of locking users into "no discrovery at all" (which appears to be a protest against proprietary secret "algorithms" of Meta/etc) Mastodon should strive to give users options to choose any algo they want, or even create their own discovery algorithms. Choices empower.

  1. Since the ground war in Gaza began on 27.10, 168 IDF soldiers have died. But Hamas claims 1,600, and this is a good explanation for why there's no ceasefire. Israel can't hide this many bodies of its own soldiers. 1,600 goes well beyond a lie and gets into gross military illiteracy. Wars happens when two sides have different views of their capabilities; Hamas says it's winning symmetrically, which is Baghdad Bob levels of batshit. No wonder it said no to Egypt's generous ceasefire offer.
ifilipau,
@ifilipau@mas.to avatar

@Alon

Re IDF losses. IDF soldiers were adding context: Israel is relatively small country, and (almost) everybody knows (almost) everybody. There is no way to lie about their own casualties, since it'd be too obvious to Israelis themselves.
