What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

@RickiTarr I think another key for us is that neither one of us stands on ceremony or fake fronts. We eloped to get married. We usually only remember our anniversary when a friend reminds us of it (it happens to be on Mike Oldfield's birthday, so he'll send me a text saying happy birthday). We hate formal affairs, preferring low-key times.

jda,
@jda@social.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr funny you should ask that! We had our 27th anniversary yesterday (we lived together for like 10 years before that) and I think the only bit of advice I would give is to be flexible and forgiving. See how the other person treats people who can't fight back, like wait staff and bartenders. When my wife and I sit at a bar, we are fast friends with all the servers in no time. We drive each other crazy sometimes but that's just being people.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

jda,
@jda@social.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr I had a pretty great high school experience, honestly. A tiny high school in NH (graduating class of about 60), I was involved in sports, theater, and the class vice-president. I was just good enough to cross most of the cliques, from nerd to jock. I ran out of courses to take(!), so I had "independent study" chemistry and history as a senior. Killed me in college, though, because it was way too easy.

Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

Morning Mastodonians!

So I got my skates sharpened yesterday. They asked me the question I dreaded - what setting? I shrug and he says okay, 0.5" it is. I'll have to remember because they felt pretty good this morning. But I have to untie them from the pads and I never seem to put them back on correctly. Sure enough, despite studying it and studying it, I tied them to the wrong pad, so I had to fix it this morning. Silly me. At least my team won.

Thanks to a link via @pluralistic I was led to the horrifying accurate description of today's "fascism". It is a long bloody rant but absolutely brilliant Just great reading for a gray cold day in New England.

"no such thing as a smart fascist. Not emotionally, not intellectually, not strategically or philosophically or practically. The ideology itself is about as clever and complex as a rock to the face: me best + them bad + you do what me say or else you them."

You know, Cory Doctorow often writes of horrifying inequities and the terrible state of things, but this post about "private equity" could be the most infuriating and disgusting he's done yet. What a terrible time we live in.

Morning Mastodonians!

Serious Sam 4's Chapter 8, Machina Ex Deus (ha ha), is really kicking 4 Guys Co-op around. We did make it to the boss both times we played last night, but without enough extra lives to take it down. Two parts of the level are just completely insane. The first part is where waves of kleers come at you and then attack drones are added in seriously deranged numbers. Then we are locked in a field, where waves of kamikazes and gnarrs are followed by a werebulls and robots.

Morning Mastodonians!

I had a pretty nice long weekend. We did a ton of work outside on Saturday and Sunday, as the weather was good. I did a bunch of pressure washing, got the lawn mowed and even put down mulch in the front gardens. We have a gorgeous Japanese Red Maple in the front yard that we keep trying to find perennials that will take, but none ever have, so we just mulch around it now. I did get the pool emptied out but haven't cleaned it out enough to begin filling it yet.

And yesterday was a day of #boardgames. I saw some friends I hadn't seen in years. Several in this group go back 30+ years, when we first began meeting at another friend's house for weekly sessions of these new fangled "Euro" or "German" games. We played "Veiled Fate" at 7 players. Fun hidden role game of trying to figure out who your teammate is! And then Challengers, which is a quick deckbuilding game of tournament War. Good times.

Morning Mastodonians!

It was a good, spirited hockey game this morning, even if we only had 15 skaters, which is my least favorite number. I consider 16 skaters the bare minimum, as it means no one has to triple shift. After we went ahead 2-0, they scored 4 on me, mostly through screens but still were annoying, as they went 5-hole, which I feel like I should never give up. We got a late goal, but never tied them up. Still, a pretty good workout for the penultimate skate.

It looks like great weather again but I have some errands to run, so I am not sure I'll be able to take the for . It has become such a regular thing that they get all antsy come lunchtime, following me around and whining like I will forget. But I need to get more mulch and a few other things and I just don't have much extra time. Tonight, C & I will play but I need to get to bed early, so maybe just one room as usual.

Morning Mastodonians!

I had some seriously bad puck luck this morning. At least 4 of the goals scored on me deflected off a skater on the way in, including my defense twice. I still should have been more aggressive in my crease. I was too deep and didn't have time to make the stop after the deflection. But other than that, I felt okay. Still a bit stiff and sore in the left knee, and just stiff in the right knee. I've never been a "bad knee" guy but it's another downside to getting older.

Not much else planned for or even the weekend. Not sure what of the myriad timewasters I've added to my life I will get involved with tonight. I should probably just finish Poor Things and get it over with. I have most of the other 2024 Best Picture nominees available, so maybe I could knock another one off the list, even if they are too long (Flower Moon) or boring (Maestro). I want to watch The Zone of Interest. I think it is coming to free streaming soon.

Morning Mastodonians!

I had one of my quietest mornings ever between the pipes this morning but a few unfortunate bounces led to a 3-2 loss. Bounces off skates, crossbars, and even my D's stick led to 3 early goals. But they skated hard in front of me and I probably faced another 10 shots max the rest of the morning. We managed 2 goals but couldn't get the tying one across. 15 skaters is probably my least favorite number. The season is winding down with a whimper. 2 more skates.

A blustery rainy day . We'll get some cleaning started but I canceled out of day tomorrow with my sister and clan. @adrienne hasn't been feeling all that well and I'm just not feeling up to it myself. I would rather just putter about tomorrow, trying to get the house in order. We finally finished replacing all the carpet with flooring, so it's time to put everything back or, even better, throw it away.
