This means is now officially, as opposed to "we've known it for months now", a far-right disinformation network.

As the expression goes: Wenn ein am Tisch sitzt, und daneben 10 andere, die dasitzen und mit ihm diskutieren, dann hast du einen Tisch mit 11 Nazis." ("If you have one Nazi sitting at a table talking to 10 other people, then you've got a table with 11 Nazis").

"He said the Linux Foundation’s adoption of Open Tofu raised serious questions. 'What does it say for the future of open source, if foundations will just take it and give it a home. That is tragic for open source innovation. I will tell you, if that were to happen, there'll be no more open source companies in Silicon Valley.' "

Uh, well, you're just making the argument for copyleft right there, dude.

I'm seriously considering defederating from at this point. I'm applying a limit for now, which means if you're on that instance, I may not see you.

Mike Stone (effectively) doubles down on moderation principles based on keyword, not context. Additionally, he confirms limiting accounts without notification is part of the policy, effectively shadowbanning accounts.

Why am I doing this?

In Italian, I need to polish my grammar. When I speak, I forget verb forms and so forth. My understanding is pretty solid by now.

Romanian is my inlaw's language. I understand enough for getting by, but I have little sense of the grammar yet.

Japanese I studied a long time ago, and regret forgetting.

Castellan I needed this summer, and is close enough to Italian that I really have no excuse for not speaking when I understand most.

Swahili? Random African choice.

Free Software: "let's build free stuff for each other"

Open Source: "let's attract unpaid volunteers to write code we can extract value from"

Meta joining Fedi: "let's reduce our cost by letting unpaid volunteers deal with the distribution load of a platform our users dominate"

There's a pattern here, folks.

I'm not usually leaning into this, because I'm still trying to figure this out for myself, but I'm upset. So this one needs to get out:

Tearing into an autistic person for expressing themselves differently from expectations is some ableistic shit.

I know I'm not advertising this on my profile, but I'm also not exactly keeping it under wraps.

(No, I don't think it's that simple, either. But I am angry. It'll pass, though.)

I'm being a tad mean about Google's attempt to DRM the web, I suppose, but this is mostly defensive. I really am weirded out by the people involved. Either naive, or evil, it's hard to gauge.

I don't know who I'm posting this for, but you may find it interesting. I've been adding subtitles to @interpeer_talks videos (not all finished yet), and here are some notes.

First off, I've been using https://github.com/m1guelpf/auto-subtitle which is using whisper.

Whisper has an annoying API in that it'll extract speech from all the video before returning it, which means if your process fails at any time before completion, you won't get partial text. Who designs an API like that in this century?

sigh

Still fascinating how unusable has become since the Microsoft takeover. The same happened to LinkedIn - previously it had limited functions, but those seemed to do their thing okay-ish.

Freedom 0 (The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose) is defective.

I would really like for my software not to be used to exploit or murder people, or any unethical shit.

I think the formulation of that freedom is solely focused on the damage restrictions can do, which isn't wrong. But it completely ignores the damage that liberty can do.

So the idea is that this kind of use would be unlawful anyway. Fair, but there's a wide range between unlawful and unethical.

Seriously considering defederating from mastodon.social at this point.

If that affects you, I'm sorry.

jens, (edited ) to fediverse
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

Every argument I have seen so far for not immediately defederating from boils down to one of two points.

  1. The security of is rubbish; blocking won't help.

To which my response is: Yes, mate, I'm sure you're also handing out copies of your house key because crowbars exist.

  1. The users of don't deserve to be blocked out.

That's something I agree with, actually. But they're not my responsibility. The accounts on my instance are. Which makes this something...

Between @downey and @aral getting issues with , is it too much to speculate that they're preparing to go along with moderation rules?

Any other, similar experiences? @doot and @nightjar had issues before, Someone got banned for calling Rowling a TERF, me for calling a AfD-adjacent person a Nazi (that was years ago).

Thanks to feedback, I'm unsure if this is new - which would be good, it could just be the same old issues. Can we collectively watch this?

Been playing around with @forgejo actions the last few days, because that seems to open up some possibilities (running our own runners, etc), but dear Cthulhu the workflow syntax is half baked compared to Woodpecker/Drone.

That wasn't great, but it was better than GitLab's syntax, which was way worse than Travis.

Makes me sad once more that Travis got taken over by some years back and made life so much worse for the fine folk I met from there.

And debugging actions? Hell.

I would like to remind folk today of the so-called "Nazi bar" problem:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Nazi_bar

"A space in which bigots or extremists have come to dominate due to a lack of moderation or by moderators wishing to remain neutral or avoid conflict."

You can extend this to Meta. No, plenty of folk joining their AP-enabled service will NOT be bigots or extremists.

But Meta is. Because they already treat the fediverse as a place where "shot-callers" need to be influenced.
