@bitwarden I only have one feedback item about the desktop version for Linux, Gnome to be precisely. The application is very bad (not) integrated with the Gnome desktop. Please make it a native GTK application and make sure it's integrated with native Gnome keyring (Seahorse).

If ever aliens visit earth and are curious about the way our society is organized, I suggest that we recite the "Story of the two boats".

It starts like this: "Titan and Adriana are two vessels recently lost at sea, four days and 4,000 miles apart. The five men who lost their lives on the Titan have been getting wall-to-wall coverage in the media worldwide. Meanwhile, the estimated 700 who died when the Adriana ..."

So because I apparently NEED another keyboard, I got a Mini with the optical linear red switches after touching one in Paris.

(I love my Topre but it can get a bit tiring after a long coding session. Also, I’ve always wanted a 60%)

Anyway, great little , crappy proprietary Windows-only software. Used my Windows test machine to map Shift to Hypershift which makes the arrow keys usable.

Then, in , had to press Fn+menu until the correct profile kicked in.

History shows that patriarchy is not natural, nor does it begin with fathers in families. According to Angela Saini, author of the new book THE PATRIARCHS, patriarchy begins with state power, and slowly works its way into families. In addition, men did not gain power over women by being "stronger." They did it by setting up networks of political support -- and by systematically dismantling support for women. This recent LSE lecture from Saini is a fascinating listen. https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/patriarchy-where-did-it-all-begin/id279428154?i=1000614580804

You asked for it, and it’s coming. Quote posts, search, and groups are on their way. In the meantime, check out the new onboarding experience launching today. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/

joenepraat,
@joenepraat@todon.nl avatar

@Mastodon

Below paragraph is a paradox and probably even gaslighting. What you actually say is: Let's offer centralization to showcase decentralization. This can only be a valid option when on mastodon.social migration is advertised and migration includes posts.

That said, I'm really looking forward to quote posts and groups!

"Decentralization is a big part of Mastodon’s DNA and is at the forefront of our mission. You may be asking, how a default server option furthers decentralization. We believe it’s important for Mastodon to be good as a product on its own merits, and not just because of its ideology. If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder. Making the onboarding process as easy as possible helps new users get past the sign-up process and more quickly engage with others. This gives us a far better chance of showcasing what decentralized social networks have to offer instead of having that person bounce and never hearing from them again."

joenepraat,
@joenepraat@todon.nl avatar

@Mastodon For people who are afraid that quoted posts wouldn't be something you can't opt-out of, @Gargron said in this post (https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/109623910323239777) that "If we did do it we'd like to make it something you can opt out of …".

Although I personally prefer opt-in, I think this is also fine, especially considering new users wouldn't find this opt-in toggle so easily in the settings (except when asked during onboarding - what I don't think will happen).

Opt-out means there are two user options to implement:

  1. Opt-out default for all posts (under Posting defaults)
  2. Opt-out for single posts (below the compose window)

Actually these are the same options as the 'Posting privacy', that you can also set as a posting default or only for single posts.

❗ Another important thing to consider is an option for server administrators to reverse the opt-out. This is especially important for existing communities, who want to keep the old behaviour, but still give their users the option to opt-in.

My most used social medias in 2010:

  1. Twitter
  2. Facebook
  3. Foursquare
  4. Bebo
  5. StumbleUpon

My most used social medias in 2023:

  1. Mastodon
  2. Instagram
  3. Reddit

In the beginning of 2010 I was registered to over 150 social media sites. The rise of the social media were exciting times. There were rarely any algorithms, no TikTok, no Instagram for Android, no ads on Twitter.

However, over the years everything went to shit. The social media sites died one by one and couple of the dominating players slowly shifted to platforms where your data was no longer yours, where you were the money machine. The sad thing is, most of the people didn't even notice this change.

I'm really hopeful about the rise of the open Internet, , etc. We need this.

@Mojeek How do we know if what you promise is true? I see nothing open sourced, only API's. Or do we just need to blindly trust you?

Maybe separating the search data and the frontend would be an idea. So that the frontend is decentralized, so privacy issues are less centralized.
