Hospitals owned by private equity firms are the most in harming patients, staff, and more. https://arstechnica.com/health/2024/01/hospitals-slash-staff-services-quality-of-care-when-private-equity-takes-over/

Not surprising really, but I'm glad it's reported.

As of I'm not sure when but it must be pretty recent, Mastodon.social no longer shows a "Follows you" tag on profiles. If someone follows you but you don't follow them the follow button says "Follow back" and if they follow you and you follow them the button says "Mutual". I do not like this. I very, very, very much do not like this.

joeo10,
@joeo10@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mcc The .social instance is running alpha releases so that is likely the reason why you're seeing these "tests". It hasn't been released in any stable version yet.

I recently found a way to see if a website supports feeds per this website: https://openrss.org/

Since most websites don't disclose if they support it anymore, this is a very good way to find out and also get a feed even if they don't.

It looks like the only escape right now from endless Iowa caucus stupidity news talk (protip: Trump will win, by a gazillion points), is to watch an old Roger Corman movie. "Battle Beyond the Stars" should do nicely.

Do not put the NFL behind a streaming paywall.

It'll only encourage them to make more games into pay per view events.

Go watch this documentary called "The Internet's Old Boy" which is a great look at his life and career from the people who knew him. https://archive.org/details/TheInternetsOwnBoyTheStoryOfAaronSwartz

It's going to take a miracle at this point. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/01/fcc-to-halt-sign-ups-for-internet-discounts-as-republicans-threaten-funding/

The American Dialect Society has chosen as their 2023 word of the year! https://americandialect.org/2023-word-of-the-year-is-enshittification/

Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) coined the spot on word for the lifecycle of online platforms all over, from growth to decaying into inevitable death.

Finally, here's a mainstream organization decided to give the word its due.

I like this section of the piece which screenshot is attached below as while today is a cause for celebration, don't forget that there's still corporations and the copyright cartel that are attempting to kill these efforts.
