hiring a hitman is a complicated game theory problem because the hitman always has the option of just taking the money and calling the cops. you have to convince them that you are capable of hiring another hitman to come after the first hitman, but the very act of trying to hire the first hitman indicates that you don't have a second, more reliable hitman ready to go. so i guess the moral of the story is don't be a landlord. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-05-07/landlord-sentenced-20-years-in-prison-in-murder-for-hire-plots

More than 40 arrests at P2 parking structure, a sit in at Moore Hall, and continued unclear action at this morning. I havent made it to campus yet but apparently cops are checking IDs all through campus.

This is a garbage headline that is fractally wrong and also why biden has lost 20% margin in youth vote in a year. The only violence at the encampment was committed AGAINST them by the police and the fascist mobs the police gave carte blanche to. The encampment was NOT chaotic - it was highly orderly, well disciplined, and a place of education and solidarity. The encampment is a protest AGAINST violence sanctioned by the Biden administration.

in 2009, on totally homebrew software, The Pirate Bay served 20 million simultaneous peers on 10 servers (20 for the website) for $3,000 a month.

i wonder how much serving 20 million simultaneous users costs netflix. there are ~260 million total subscribers of netflix (of which a fraction are active at a time) and its total operating expenses (which is obviously A Lot More Different Things Than TPB) are ~$7 Billion a year.

the comparison isn't all that ridiculous. netflix is about 10% of all bandwidth, and bittorrent used to be >30% of all bandwidth - of which TPB tracked roughly half.

A future for the web is the radical idea that its bad to put all data in a single place owned by 3 companies and rented by a few hundred. The internet wasnt a mistake, the cloud was a mistake. Platforms were a mistake. A mistake where its not only possible but routine for "everyone's health data" to get stolen. https://infosec.exchange/@patrickcmiller/112341111375581551

I need to share my health data with like 3 people that arent me. Why on earth is that data in the same pile as literally everyone else's.

Im as anti-"AI" as the next person, but I think its important to keep in mind the larger strategic picture of "AI" w.r.t. when it comes to - both have the problem of inaccurate information, mining the commons, etc. But Google's use of LLMs in search is specifically a bid to cut the rest of the internet out of information retrieval and treat it merely as a source of training data - replacing traditional search with search. That includes a whole ecosystem of surveillance and enclosure of information systems including assistants, chrome, android, google drive/docs/et al, and other vectors.

DuckDuckGo simply doesnt have the same market position to do that, and their system is set up as just an allegedly privacy preserving proxy. So while I think more new search engines are good and healthy, and LLM search is bad and doesnt work, I think we should keep the bigger picture in mind to avoid being reactionary, and I dont think the mere presence of LLM search is a good reason to stop using it.

Are there actually neuroscientists who dont believe that most invertebrates, fish, etc. have lowercase-c consciousness, an internal subjective experience of the world? Is the alternative that they are just reflex machines? Why wouldnt we make the opposite assumption - that animals that have a complex enough nervous system to run a whole body thats responsive to their ecosystem are "conscious" until proven otherwise. But what would the point be of proving otherwise? I guess im just deeply uninterested in semantic games that exclude most of the animal kingdom from the assumption of mere subjectivity.
