is a vibrant and sometimes overwhelming free-admission temporary art gallery space takeover of unused office buildings by DC arts community, now in its 25th year but first iteration since 2017. Next Meet the Artists is April 13th, but it runs every weds-sun until April 28th, and there are so so many scheduled events.

Yesterday a student came to me with project questions. She was trying to learn some ground-level tool basics (how useState works in React, but details don’t matter), and she was just hopelessly confused: the pieces were there, fragments of nascent understanding littered all around, but somehow it just wasn’t coming together for her.

She walked me through her fragments of non-working code, and as I was trying to figure out how she’d got so lost, she popped back to her documentation source:

ADDENDUM:

Worth mentioning that in addition to being a relatively new developer, this student is an English language learner. Both the code and the prose take mental effort. She’s doing a hell of a lift here! (Humans are amazing.)

Nothing has taught me more about writing documentation than watching students read documentation. It’s eye-opening.

If you’re a tool vendor: find a capable student / new junior dev, and shut up while you watch them read your docs. It will be…instructive.

I have a PhD. Nobody CARES that I don't have any GCSEs. BRAIN PLEASE STOP

So I just learned what "The Stack" is today: an aggregation of GitHub repos for machine learning from which I can opt out.

But I won't.

I won't because they scraped some hot garbage I wrote in bash and Python that would make you faint. Bottom-of-the-barrel throw-away scripts full of coding crimes. Stuff like

find | grep | awk | xargs | ugh

...invoked via subprocess.run() then fed into more garbage.

I want "artificial intelligence" to learn this. It's going to be fantastic.

@hub oh gosh, if we could convince these things to spit out GPL-3 license text everywhere - possibly hidden in unicode or something - it would be fantastic. Ultimate poison pill.

We just received our "jaarafrekening". This is the final yearly invoice sent by our energy company. They are about to pay us €252, and we will continue to pay them €5 per month next year, just like last year. i.e. overall our energy company is paying us about €200 for last year's electricity. Everything in our home is powered by electricity. No gas connection. No wood burner.

Nothing that we've done to achieve a negative energy bill was especially expensive. In particular, our installation of a air-air heat pump and a couple of extra solar panels cost far less than several of our neighbours paid for the wood burning stoves they've installed, which stink up the neighbourhood all through winter.

We also don't have to buy wood to burn.

People concerned about the cost of heating with gas buy woodburners at a higher rate than heat pumps largely because they have no idea about the relative costs. If they knew, perhaps we could have clean air.

I'll write a comprehensive blog post at the end of March about energy consumption, costs & emissions due to the heatpump vs. gas this winter. I can tell you already that we using a lot less total energy now.

As we do our silly Chicago tradition of dyeing the river a violent shade of green, I think it's a good time to remind people that our ancestors reversed the flow of the river to provide safe drinking water from Lake Michigan and earlier, in the 1860's, lifted the entire city to improve drainage and public health.

Remember that any time someone says heat pumps and renewable energy are hard.

I see more and more often that people post bit.ly links here. Please don't. First and foremost — it hides the real URL, so I don't know where I am sent to. Second: you force me to use a service that collects, aggregates and shares data on who clicks what when, which I consider very bad practice. Finally, no matter how long your URL is, it only counts as 23 characters in your post, so no need to "shorten" links [1]

TL;DR post real links and don't spy on me.

Sometimes I see code so beautiful I feel honored just to read it and I hope I will be able to write code like that one day. But I think maybe to get that kind of beauty you need at least two iterations past where my restless brain says “it’s good enough”.
