I do get the feeling that this $3.3 billion dollar investment by Microsoft will get a lot of attention within 25 miles of the site of this event, but this is big money and it's national news, too. Live stream with Biden just about to take the stage.

Look how amazingly skinny the new iPad Pro is.

Of all the pics I've seen, IMO this one does the best job at conveying that skinniness.

Makes me want one, just for the skinny.

@davemark correct me if I'm wrong, but has Apple started using the iPad to debut new hardware that presumably will end up in iPhones, MacBooks and iMacs? Sure felt that way to me watching yesterday's event. Starting to feel like the iPad with keyboard is on track to replace laptops for most use.

@davemark I was also thinking of the new display. Also wondering if the creative community is finding more reason to move to iPad, given upgrades to FCP, etc.

Check out this custom Nike sneaker (see left pic).

A pair of these were made for Tim Cook, who wore them (right pic) during yesterday's

Zoom in on the shoe, check out those pencil markings surrounding the Nike "swoosh".

Surprised they didn't go with Skechers, though. (I'll show myself out). ☺️

New investigation:

Dozens of fed judges attended wk-long seminars at luxury retreats -receiving free rms, free meals, free $ for travel worth 1000s - & failed to fully disclose as required.

Judges w disclosure issues incl some big names.

Aileen , currently presiding over ’s docs case, attended 2wk-long seminars at lux resort near Yellowstone Nat Park...failed to upload disclosure w/in 30 days as required.

Court said it was an “inadvertent” omission.

Thanks @GottaLaff

(NPR) At one event, a far-right German politician with a history of racially inflammatory and anti-immigrant statements made a presentation to dozens of judges. At others, judges heard from an advocacy group that uses lawsuits in federal court to change environmental policy, as well as from corporate CEOs in the oil and pharmaceutical industries.

Colin Jost didn't waste a lot of his time joking about Biden's age and memory. He probably figured people in the audience weren't going to be that interested in a re-hash of what they seem to write about multiple times a day.

Y'know I went to high school in Brookings, South Dakota (grade school in Rapid) and I had a feeling and so I looked it up and yes, there are plenty of no-kill animal shelters in the state. Why their governor couldn't find one is beyond me. "right to life, and all that.

@dbc3 @GottaLaff @bronakins I monitor your feed while also keeping open a tab from NYT & honestly what you aggregate is more thorough, generally put up faster. As for "only my followers see" that's not actually true on Mastodon. I know this because I regularly get comments and shares from people who clearly don't follow me, & they come so fast I know it's not because they saw it thanks to a follower. You're providing an immense service and I thank you for it.

I have diverse interests, which is why I can watch a 30-minute video of some random dude cleaning up an overgrown yard, pivot to watching a 30-minute video of some random dude cleaning the most insanely dirty rug on the planet and follow that up by watching some random dude cleaning a rat-infested 60's muscle car discovered sitting in a barn for 20 years.

It's lazy to keep using the same terminology to describe the same events from the same persective and so I propose that the New York Times replace "E.P.A. Severely Limits Pollution From Coal-Burning Power Plants," with "E.P.A.Takes Steps To Drastically Improve Air Quality for persons living near Coal-Burning Plants."

Here's William Jones who authored the 1864 bill.

Some fun facts:

He abandoned his first wife and their children in Missouri.

His second wife was a 12 year old Mexican girl. He abducted her and after a complaint submitted his resignation to President Buchanan before he was fired.

@GottaLaff So, a real standup guy. thanks for posting.

JamesWNeal,
@JamesWNeal@mstdn.social avatar

@GottaLaff But wait. From a friend on another platform. "the Wikipedia entry does not say that Jones wrote the 1864 Arizona law. The law is called the "Howell Code" because it was written by Judge William Thompson Howell. The Wiki entry on Jones says this: "Jones translated a condensed version of the territory's new legal code, the 'Howell Code," into Spanish. So Jones was merely a translator, not the author of the law."

In an ongoing campaign that seeks to influence congressional and other political debates to stoke anti- sentiment, Kremlin-linked political strategists and trolls have written 1,000s of fabricated news articles, social media posts & comments that promote American isolationism, stir fear over the US’ border security and attempt to amplify U.S. economic & racial tensions, according to a trove of internal Kremlin documents obtained by a EU intelligence service. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/04/08/russia-propaganda-us-ukraine/

Suggest you stop thinking Jr., is so stupid he doesn't know he's spreading lies. Same with Daddy and every far right politician.

The nature of the lies, the diversity of educational background makes it far more likely they all know what they're spreading are lies, that the lies are chosen because they support narratives.

And until you can show me that being called out for lying, being laughed at, ridiculed for "being so stupid," causes people to turn away from them - they're succeeding.

Some insight into what happened in the minutes before the Key Bridge collapsed.

Cool, direct, urgent, successful. Maybe not a college degree or a 6-figure salary among them—and they used their training & experience at the most critical, high-pressure moment to save lives. All day, every day-that happens & we don't see it. That's your 'deep state? Just in Port of Baltimore, 45 cargo container ships come & go every 24 hours. 16,000 ships a year. They require all this guidance all the time (and US has 8 LARGER ports). Each ship with 5,000 containers loaded & unloaded. Not to mention The 8 construction workers on the bridge—-patching potholes in the middle of the night, so the road stays maintained, at a time that reduces inconvenience to us (and yes, is easier for them too because of low traffic). Every night...
Every night, 5 or 6 days a week, men & women just like them do that dangerous work on interstates & bridges in all 50 states. ... Here's the moment: An officer who closed one of the approaches says on radio...Can we notify the construction workers? Can we call the supervisor?' The officer was ready to drive out & warn the workers when someone on the radio — seconds later — said, The bridge is down. The whole bridge. That unnamed officer had been immediately thinking about how to save those guys out on the bridge—workers just like him. Thanks. - Thanks to all these folks who make the world run, and run safely 99% of the time, and work with skill, grace, clear-headedness in invisible but essential jobs. Even as disaster unfolded Tuesday after midnight, they were at work.
