Doh, figured out I could forward all the mail received at a PO Box I have for a business (for a small fee). I should have started doing that more than a decade ago when I stopped working in that neighborhood.

k8vsy,
@k8vsy@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr yup, I did the reverse, lol

every time I got a new apartment, I would forward my mail from my apartment to my PO BOX, it was more reliable at the PO BOX and didn't get stolen there

These solar storm numbers make me wonder for a moment how much fun I'd be having this weekend if I had picked a normal hobby like instead of building Internet infrastructure in my free time.

@kwf the bands are completely dead here in Ohio, US 😂😂

I wish they were doing something cool, but it's completely silent lol

Birthday commence. Starting high moving lower as the day wears on. Currently 28.408 MHz. Will try to post updates in the replies, but cell signal is sketchy.

But check my QRZ page to see what frequency in case I forget to post here: https://www.qrz.com/db/KC1SRI

@k8vsy Meant to tell you- I saw stations calling you on 20 meter FT8 yesterday while I was out doing but I never heard you directly unfortunately.

@AE4WX oh neat! yeah I was struggling a little on FT8 yesterday

I think I'm going to try some SSB/voice today 🙂 and see who all is out there 👀

I have some beginner questions about SDRs:

  1. Do you need to connect an SDR to a computer?

  2. Do you need special software on a computer to access the SDR? Or are they all web-based these days?

I'm looking at possibly getting this:

thank you!

I'm slowly going through the learning materials for the exam. I want to get properly prepared, not just learn the answers, I hope to take the exam somewhere in early autumn.

@stfn awesome, good luck! it's definitely a fun hobby 🙂

I'm reaching out to the mastodon community to find out if there's anyone in the Houston, Texas area that will be holding an exam session. I tried the Facebook route but that failed miserably and I don't trust the exam session listings. Are their any volunteer examiners in the Houston area that can help steer me in the right direction outside of MeetUp and Facebook. :)

Thank you!

@k8vsy@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr @0xF21D yeah, +1 for https://ham.study/ (same thing as hamstudy.org) just different URL

I took my extra online via the GLAARG back in 2020, they were very good and professional

good luck!

Hmm, I'm going to be walking around looking for air leaks for weeks and weeks, LOL. Now that I know what to look for. (training from the DOE available on how to detect air leaks... cool photo showing what leaks look like). #FLIR #insulation #weatherization #EnergyEfficiency

anyone have any recommendations on modern CD players? something like these, but isn't more than $100 (USD)?

(my dad gave me his old receiver and turntable, so hopefully I can find something that can plug into the receiver, that doesn't break the bank)

I don't use software or traditional binder for logging but a small notebook simply because I make many notes i.e. (Solar Data, Antenna & Rig used, key used, etc) & use index cards of frequent fliers (Hunters) my sites,and club member numbers.

Regular reminder: if your site or app doesn’t work in Firefox, it’s broken.

I lived through the “this site requires and/or is best in IE” era, and I’d rather burn it all down than return to that.

Pro-tip: Firefox does most things better anyway. Give it a spin and enjoy a less-tracked web.
