Pro tip: if you're asked to take several boxes of stuff from the garage to the thrift store for , check the box BEFORE you donate it for the stuff you are going to the thrift store to buy. 😂 (Thinking of going to the thrift store to find a cheap slotted spoon to fish out stuff from my beeswax melter... and my wife asked me to take the boxes in the garage... where there were a couple of slotted spoons 🤔 ).

I once took a towel rack the local building goods thrift store only to re-buy the same one a couple of months later when we found a spot that needed one.

Good to hear. I am rebuilding my 12 year old "gaming" PC that has mostly sat unused. I was going to experiment with running Debian for gaming and radio stuff. Maybe move my laptop to Debian too if it works out well.

    Wonder how many people heard about the storm and decided to go do something else for the day.

    JS8 was pretty quiet at 5:30 PT this morning, but the couple of stations hearing my heartbeat were about as far away as normal.

    I think this afternoon or tomorrow will be my first attempt at making hot sauce, mostly to give away. I accidentally bought more hot pepper plants this year than I intended!

    Legitimately a big part of what got me into woodworking was wanting to build nice cases (not vinyl fake woodgrain) for yet unbuilt radio projects.

    Just a caution from having a Dell tablet in that form factor with fold down keyboard, I would just caution that without having an even surface to put it down on it is difficult to type on... If you were planning to use the keyboard.

    Has anyone here used U-Haul UBox service to move stuff recently? I am looking for the best way to get the last of my stuff from my mom's house in NJ to WA.

    I used them about a decade ago to move here. It was a terrible experience, mostly because they had no tracking system. Unfortunately, they're very cost competitive for the amount I need to move and they service both ends of the move. Have they gotten any better since 2012?

    Okay. and electrical engineers out there. I have a mystery balun, maybe from when I was first licensed. It's label rubbed off and I am trying to figure out if it is a 4:1 or 1:1 with a NanoVNA.

    Using an assortment of adapters, with either a BNC 50ohm terminator or dummy load, and the NanoVNA ch0 connected to the SO239, I get a SWR of 2:1 around 55mhz and very high everywhere else. Reversing it, with ch0 hooked to the terminals and the dummy load on the SO239, I get 1:1 there.

    First test setup, probes hooked to a white PVC pipe balun and a blue coax out the bottom.
    Second test setup with dummyload on the so239 and terminals leading to the NanoVNA.

    kc2ihx,
    @kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

    So, is this balun bad, or my test setup just too janky?

    kc2ihx,
    @kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

    Okay, after an attempt to calibrate without digging out the proper calibration set, I got something that looks more like 4:1 SWR.

    kc2ihx,
    @kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

    @ai6yr

    Thanks - I was fairly certain it was a 4:1.

    Oh no, now I have another antenna to consider building, and not enough time. :)

    Been meaning to replace my "G5RV" that is lacking a proper balun with something that does to see if it makes a difference with noise. OCF was on my list.

    Also was considering the delta loop in the "D" configuration here: https://rsars.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/40m-10m-delta-loop-antenna-gu3whn-iss-1-3.pdf

    I'm sure I remember a clock app for which was deliberately vague.

    It would declare the time as "Nearly tea-time" or "A little after elevenses" or "Quite late" or "Gosh, that's early".

    I can find no evidence that it existed and am beginning to wonder if I dreamt it.

    Anyone know what I'm wibbling about?
