Hey! I'm compiling a "trending" section for our bookstore, but I want it to be books that are popular on the fediverse.

Tell me about books you've read recently or just really enjoy. Does not have to be a recent release. Bonus points if it's an independent author.

Fiction, Non-fiction, poetry, etc.

@ajroach42 Michael Harriot's Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed History of America was one of my top reads in 2023 and should be part of every US History curriculum at the high school and college level (and read by every American) - fantastic book - https://www.michaelharriot.com/poscasts

I'm slowing reading (in French) @jmechner Replay: Memoires d'une Famille which is coming out in English next month (graphic novel about 3 generations of his family & the making of Prince of Persia but also WWI and WWII)

The white whale of my is getting storage to work with . User namespaces just do not play well with NFS. I've gotten it to "work" with a hacky workaround but I'm still seeking a solution if any homelab folks on here have solved this problem: https://github.com/containers/podman/discussions/21606

Meta is downranking/hiding political content on Threads. The company says Threads will “not recommend any content/accounts that post about politics.”

Here’s the issue: what counts as “politics” is often any news abt people who have had their whole existence politicized, such as news about Black people, LGBTQ people, disabled ppl, women, etc. Climate scientists, public health experts etc also considered “political” https://www.axios.com/2024/02/09/meta-political-content-moderation-threads

A few years ago, the source code to some rather popular old video arcade games magically became available.

Also, magically, someone named Synamax has rewritten the source code to those very old video games so they can compile in a more modern assembler and result in 100% compatible ROM files. The kind of grunt work that needs to be done, and is also magical when it's done.

Includes how it was done and links to the other projects.

I may be unemployed due to the cruel coldness of the random Riot Games layoffs 2.5 weeks ago, but since then I've still managed to ship a fix. 🤣 I convinced LinkedIn to fix a major bug in their conversion workflow by posting thoroughly and thoughtfully about my experience and speaking briefly with engineers - you can take the designer out of the company but you can't stop the designer from designing.

Just imagine what I can do consulting with your company.
