I think it is ok for gringo dilettantes to celebrate Cinco de Mayo because, in a way, we are all the victim of our nation's wealthiest dicks selling us out to rapacious imperialist assholes against whom we need to make a valiant stand or be doomed to serfdom, plus beer.
Most of the time, there'd also be this woman who would use the elliptical across from me and she was always wearing this t-shirt that said "fear the fork" and I assumed it was some sort of weird disordered eating thing and was always like WTF?
One day when I was leaving the gym with Kev, she passed by wearing her shirt and I was like "Kev! WTF is up with that shirt?!?" and he was like "What's wrong with it?" and I was like "I just think it's super weird to be wearing a shirt that seemingly has a pro-anorexia message on it?" and that's when Kev let me know that "Fear the Fork" is just a slogan for the ASU Sun Devils.
Does anyone have experience with #solar#generators? It's too expensive to get solar panels and a power bank installed, but I like the idea of using renewable energy for back up power. It's hard to know how much capacity one needs, or how many charges the lithium battery can take?
This is the most sobering part about the article I posted re: bird flu.
"Health officials said they couldn’t do further investigation of how the man was infected because “epidemiological investigations were not able to be conducted at the farm” where he worked. They were also unable to test other workers at the same farm.
That kind of testing is critical to answer questions about how the worker became infected, whether others were being infected and if so, for how long they were infected, what kind of symptoms they had, if they had any at all.
The CDC is currently looking for farms that will allow them to conduct such a detailed study."
And this was a month ago! Apparently, some sick workers at some farms allowed themselves to be tested, and turned out to be sick with more pedestrian illnesses. But, some sick farm workers refuse to, or are afraid to, be tested, and they cannot be compelled to do so.
@bookstodon Blackstone Publishing is really putting out some good work of late. I recently picked up Lilith, by Eric Rickstad, and was pleasantly surprised by the strength of the writing and the fearlessness of the highly topical plot.
Hey There fellow Fediversians - Happy Thursday to you all. Who would like to brighten my day with a little share of a Throwback Thursday photo or two? Could be you, could be your pets, could be both. I'll go first and then it'll be your turn. Ready?
@shekinahcancook@dustcircle@Nonya_Bidniss thank you for letting me know. Is it because of the country of origin? I know Temu built warehouses in the U.S., so people would not be afraid to order from China.
@GottaLaff This is going to absolutely upend the ecosystem, which is already disrupted by the reduction of insects, a main food source for birds. This type A avian influenza has already made the jump to mammals so quickly. It's sobering.
@GottaLaff@GiddingsMJ the last article I saw said that 463 out of 889 cases resulted in death over the past ten years, from 23 reporting countries. Mortality rates vary from 52 to 56 percent, depending on the time period you choose.
