Despite breathless reporting by our local media outlets, I continue to not see the big deal about the gauge issue for the .

The problem is a bummer but it sounds super fixable, and folks are making a big deal over a nothingburger story. Folks seem to be getting outraged for reasons I don't understand. Y'all had bad requirements document and now have bad results, so to be safe you've got to move a bunch of rail over a eighth inch.

knizer,
@knizer@toot.boston avatar

@Walker My earlier linked thread talks about the problem space as I understand it as a layperson.

At issue is a 16th of an inch narrower than optimal across a ~56 inch span. Is a quarter inch an acceptable tolerance when it comes to train gauge? I'd hope so, since we have old-ass train tracks in this country, and train cars have to handle a wide variety of ranges before failure.

I am guessing that the management of the MBTA pre-Eng was Strongly Encouraged to meet a deadline of getting the GLX done, and brushed the 16th inch difference issue under the rug because the trains should technically be able to (I assume) run just fine when the tracks are outside of tolerance.

I don't know how to calculate the increased derailment risk when trains are run at top speed at what was spec'ed to be 56 8/16ths inch wide tracks but are actually 56 6/16ths inch wide. Is it a 5% increase in derailment or 5000%?

Is this something @trains types can weigh in upon?

@mem_somerville Aww, and they're making it straightforward to get a replacement marriage certificate without gender info if you've got one already:

"Residents who have previously received a marriage certificate from the City of Somerville that contains a sex or gender identifier and who wish to have it reprinted without that identifier should contact the City Clerkโ€™s office in person at City Hall"

    knizer,
    @knizer@toot.boston avatar

    @thomasconnor @ssfckdt A fancy stadium is great and all but who benefits most if 10 or 100 million is spent? A big percentage of every dollar spent on a new stadium goes into developer pockets.

    Every dollar spent on a venue doesnโ€™t make the tickets or hot dogs any cheaper for the fans or make the team play a huge percentage better.

    Itโ€™s a better strategy that everybody involved gets living wage from the start, so the players can thrive and sell tickets, and thus we fans have a good time. When revenue comes in, spend any profits on the infrastructure.

    Having ice cream at the reception. Self serve. Should I get one of those little water tubs they have at buffet kind of places where you dip the scoop to clean it off? That stuff always felt unsanitary to me even pre-Covid. Is the alternative to have a scoop for each flavor? Am I overthinking this?

    knizer,
    @knizer@toot.boston avatar

    @misc My skim of ServSafe guidelines: storing the scoop in running water is preferred, ideally heated to 135F.

    Everybody touching the same scoop handle is a transmission risk; using the same scoop across flavors is an allergy/cross-contamination risk.

    If you go with 'little water tubs' whomever is on food duty could be tasked with changing out the water every n minutes while people are actively scooping ice cream? idk.

    Good luck with wedding/reception!!!

    US fire-season reminder to watch your indoor CO2 levels (get a monitor) and rig up a filtered fresh-air intake if you need to to get them below 1000-1200 if you can. Filters donโ€™t remove CO2! You gotta ventilate.

    (I know, itโ€™s not always easy, but sometimes it is. Iโ€™m not above duct-taping an air filter into a partly opened window, myself.)

    knizer,
    @knizer@toot.boston avatar

    @kissane For monitoring, we invested in the SAF Aranet4 which, today new at ~ USD $200 is out of budget for many.

    There's a lot of <$100 options, but I'm reading reports that some are fake, poorly calibrated, or wildly inaccurate.

    Do folks have for current models of 'consistent and decent' monitors, at different price points?
