"This Isn’t Justice"

https://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/2024/05/this-isnt-justice-legal-experts-blast-cannon-for-postponing-trump-case-indefinitely/

“This is news but it’s hardly unexpected..." Joyce Vance wrote. “Judge Cannon seems desperate to avoid trying this case. This isn’t justice. defendants aren’t the only ones with speedy trial act rights, we the people have them too.”

“After the election,” professor of law and former chief White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter commented, “if Trump wins Jack Smith gets fired, the case gets dismissed, and Judge Cannon is ready for SCOTUS.”

@SteveThompson

The thing about quotes like Richard Painter's is that, while it is true, if Trump wins we have much bigger problems than that. If Trump wins we are going to have full on fascism in this country. Democracy will be done for. The things he's talking about will be small potatoes compared to the resulting hellscape.

But Trump won't win. Loathing of Trump will result in Democrats winning across the board. Any other future is just too horrible to imagine. So, let's get to work.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@SteveThompson

Yup. Seemed impossible. But if he wins again, after everything we've seen, it's just beyond imagining. What would that say about this nation?

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@SteveThompson

You are certainly correct, and we can not have that happen.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@SteveThompson @DrJay

This seems like an effective way to counter some of the despair that news like Trump's success in delaying his judicial reconnings has created.

Perversions of justice and generally anti-democratic actions have a price. Everyday more and more sober minded Americans who cherish this country and its institutions are deciding the latest Republican transgression is just a bridge too far.

This is what is going to sway the election and rid us of this menace to our future.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@SteveThompson @DrJay

They are afraid. This is a time of fear.

Figuring out how to convert that fear into resistance is the key.

For those losing their heads over today's actions by Judge Cannon, take a deep breath. This was always going to happen. The writing has been on the wall since Judge Cannon was drawn for the case. Getting all worked up about it is only going to make you crazy and desperate. The way we will rid ourselves of this menace is at the polls in November.

For a sober discussion on this topic this exchange today between @Teri_Kanefield and @JonChevreau is highly recommended:

@gregspooner @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau

Sure, and there is a difference between channeling your anger and fears about this threat to democracy in all its many facets into constructive efforts, and blind rage and fatalism that leads to despondency.

The risk is that people conclude the deck is stacked against them, so it is impossible to fight back.

We need to see this as a long war and not be knocked off kilter by every setback. Particularly one that was for ordained.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@mkandle @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau

Yes, but he's not invincible. In fact, he is historically unpopular. We beat him in 2020 and we will beat him again in 2024. And this time by an even a greater margin. The net effect of Trump may be solid majorities for the Democrats in both houses. If we can work to achieve such a resounding victory, real change is possible.

The judiciary is not going to delivery us from fascism. We have to do that.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@JamesGleick @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau

Certainly not suggesting contentment with this horrible situation, but panicking every time something that could easily be predicted comes to pass is counterproductive.

We are in a long war against a determined and capable adversary. They will win battles and we will suffer setbacks. Anticipating their moves and taking a strategic approach will serve much better than responding with outrage and despair to each moment where they push an advantage.

mastodonmigration, (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@MaggyWells @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau

Would say there is anger and there is rage. They are two very different things.

Anger can be channeled into sober minded planning and effective action. Rage sends you rushing pell-mell into the fight or results in feelings of despair and helplessness.

Sure, Judge Cannon actions, which we could easily have anticipated, are outrageous. We are angry. Now what are we going to do about it? What is the smart response?

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@onpubcom @MaggyWells @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau

You are not wrong. The judiciary we get is a reflection of who we elect. If we elect criminals, we should not be surprised when the judiciary becomes corrupted.

The way out of this mess is to elect honest hard working principled people.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@peachfront @GreenFire @MaggyWells @Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau

Unfortunately, it is a long game. It has taken us a while to descend to this depth and it will take a while to fix it. But it all starts with electing good honest hard working people.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@eurobubba @JonChevreau @Teri_Kanefield

All institutions are corruptible. The US judiciary, while crafted along generally solid principles, is no exception. If we want to repair the damage, we need to elect representatives who will repair the damage, both by appointing honest jurists going forward and where possible rooting out corruption.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @eurobubba

Gotta agree with Teri here Michael. Your comment has a lot of non-constructive baiting reply guy energy.

Perhaps it is helpful to hear how others perceive your posts.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@eurobubba @JonChevreau @Teri_Kanefield

It's not just the judiciary. The US system of government is under attack from a determined domestic fascist insurgency. Focusing on any one component can lead to loss of perspective on what needs to be done to secure our future. If we stipulate that SCOTUS is currently very problematic, the conclusion must be to elect Biden and a solid Senate majority to move the needle back in the right direction. It's the same corrective for the other ills.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@eurobubba @Teri_Kanefield

Kind of a non-apology apology. You are putting words in peoples' mouths and kicking your strawman. Suggest a better approach would be to express your thoughts about the state of things or reply to specific comments of others.

Call me crazy, but maybe presidents who get themselves indicted shouldn't have their criminal trials presided over by judges they themselves appointed.

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@rbreich

That doesn't seem entirely crazy.

rbreich, to random
@rbreich@masto.ai avatar

Four facts:

  1. If Trump stole nat'l secrets, he must face justice.

  2. Thanks to Judge Cannon, it now seems impossible for a trial to happen before the election.

  3. If he's reelected, he will never face trial.

  4. Therefore, Trump must be defeated as a matter of nat'l security

mastodonmigration,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

Feel like you could have just started and ended with number 4.

Trump must be defeated as a matter of national security.

We don’t talk about it enough but it’s a huge failure that there isn’t more urgency to develop better COVID vaccines.

An Operation Warp Speed for nasal vaccines and more variant proof vaccines would transform our ability to deal with COVID and help us mitigate future pandemics.

mastodonmigration, (edited )
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@luckytran

Would be very surprised if the best minds in the world were not working full tilt on better vaccines. The vaccines we have gotten are a miracle. Sometimes things are just hard and not a conspiracy to deprive people of good things.

My dog Linus & I drove several hours to bring him to a licensed rescue org.

I woke him early to get him well hydrated before the long drive.

Pepsi replaced its 32oz Gatorade bottle with a 28oz for the same price.

Nabisco shrank the family size box of Wheat Thins by 12%.

General Mills shrank the family size box of Cocoa Puffs by 6%.

Frito-Lay shrank the size of a bag of Doritos by 5%.

Shrinkflation is everywhere.

Not the same thing, but bought some groceries last week. While leaving the store walked by the flowers and decided to buy a bunch marked $19.95, but pretty nice size. Went back in to the auto checkout and it rang up $23.95. Decided, screw this, and went and got a smaller bunch marked $13.95. You guessed it, it rang up for $15.95. This time, talked to the manager who quickly plugged in her card and gave them to me for the $13.95, saying it must be a "recent price change."
