"That impulse to scour away the messiness that makes life resilient is what many conservation biologists call the “pathology of command and control.” Today, the same drive to centralize, control and extract has driven the internet to the same fate as the ravaged forests."

Deeply and profoundly annoyed by the fact that after working so much on how fears emerge in software team changes and giving advice about behavior change, I automatically premortemed MYSELF about some changes and then had to do a self-efficacy intervention on myself 😑 and it worked 😑😑

mbbroberg,

@grimalkina this is why I have the muller-lyer tattooed on me—it never ceases to amaze and annoy me that knowledge can’t protect me from my (fast thinking) self ☠️

I’m excited to share I’m now the director of product management for cloud platform engineering 🥳

I’m going to be spending a lot of time looking at how people actually run software on the landscape and build modern storage experiences for containers. The biggest learning opportunity is exploring the intersection of and . If I know people exploring one or both, hit me up 🤙

I have ✨ a new preprint ✨ to share!!

This is a scientific review paper which seeks to provide a map, an entry point, and a call to action for improving the lives of the people who create software:

"Psychological Affordances Can Provide a Missing Explanatory Layer for Why Interventions to Improve Developer Experience Take Hold or Fail"

You can download it free and open access here:

Really enjoying the writing in this paper on visual explanations + causality learning and our clever ways of designing them. From Holly Huey and collabs (2023), has a lovely momentum right from the first sentence:

"From infants exploring the objects in their immediate environment to scientists exploring the frontiers of our solar system, humans are driven to understand how things work and use that knowledge to generate desired outcomes"

@grimalkina oh this is awesome to see — I want to work on a masters in cog sci(?) with diagramming as a way to align understanding of complex systems ( , being favorites). I’ve been in industry forever — is there a term for this type of focus?

@grimalkina thank you! I am so appreciative for the guidance and to find folks to learn from (like you). This made my day.

Just wrapped up our daughter’s 2nd birthday party and it was equal parts adorable and draining in the moment but pure joy right after.

Keeping that positive energy and appreciating the moment is a skill I’m building. These moments held reinforce it’s all worth it.

I miss meeting more of you all through our choice to share public, but I still appreciate what I'm reading. One day sharing will be more part of my day again, I know that. I think I've asked this before but maybe not - if I wanted to run a wiki, but not self-administer and also not have vast amounts of ads (ie fandom is right out), what's the best option? Willing to pay a reasonable amount.

(Mediawiki disfavored unless the hosting option includes Visual Editor; wiki-ing can be pretty lightweight—eg a good wiki plugin + page-centric configuration for Wordpress might work?)

mbbroberg,
@mbbroberg@floss.social avatar

@luis_in_brief Notion makes for a pretty excellent wiki in my experience. GitHub repo-based wiki came to mind for lower tech.

♥️♥️♥️Shoutout to the staff of the hotel I stayed at for expertly de-escalating a Karen situation!

♥️♥️♥️And shoutout to the white hotel guests that stuck around to make sure that hotel security heard exactly what she was trying to do. My favorite comment: "Wow! A Karen situation in real life! I've only ever seen these online! This is surreal! What is she thinking?"

End result, yours truly did not get kicked out of the hotel for no reason, and feels slightly better about the state of the world.

OK, Mastodon disc golfers

Who is willing to share their secrets of good putting?

Particularly at ~30 feet

Somewhere between 25 feet and 30 feet the put goes from “oh yeah” to “uh oh” 😬

How did you learn to be a great disc golf putter?

mbbroberg,
@mbbroberg@floss.social avatar

@peterbutler I finally feel confident from that distance but know it’s so personal. Mine started dropping when I found a form that included a confident rocking forward motion from my legs/core and grew to trust the fade.

What’s your understanding of what’s going wrong?

This Zoom terms of service update is wild. Can anyone elaborate on what it means in practice?

Can they recreate our likeness and voice via AI without further consent? Is this update mean they’re not HIPAA compliant?

Would love a more educated read on it.

sigh we're still talking about this I guess...

Jamie Foxx didn't say something anti-semitic. He said something people thought was anti-semitic.

Because they weren't familiar with his phrase, and he wasn't familiar with the anti-semitic dog-whistle.

He apologized for being misunderstood, not for being anti-semitic.

Yes, it is very good that he clarified.

mbbroberg,
@mbbroberg@floss.social avatar

@mekkaokereke I sincerely appreciate how he handled that. He stepped into a common trope with “they” there, but he was also clearly hurt and upset as he posted. I respect his ability to shift from hurt to empathy so quickly.

Across about ten things this week, I'll say this: mastodon has a real toxic reply guy culture going on and it is exhausting to receive this EVERY SINGLE TIME you dare say something that gets attention, as a marginalized female scientist. Worse to me tbh than typical trolling because it is so deeply rooted in credibility deficit "know your place" patterns. You all are worse than birdsite for me, where I have nearly five times more followers. Definitely thinking about leaving.

Fix your hearts.

mbbroberg,
@mbbroberg@floss.social avatar

@grimalkina I so feel this and am sad about that culture here. I’ve found less bad faith arguments but a hell of a lot of noisy if I share something against the grain. I hope it can get better and I know you deserve better 💙
