We are in “No Mow May” and the lawn is looking pretty shaggy. This article describes what is going on. Our HOA will no doubt descend on us, but a city ordinance now overrules the HOA rule about mowing. We are allowed to let the lawn go wild in May to provide for all kinds of critters to get a good start after winter. At other places we’ve lived, we always nurtured back-to-nature lawns.

1/... The only hot take I've seen is from Joyce Vance saying this would push the trial past the election. That seems pretty rational to me.

But hopefully, the outcome will be ok

Via Anthony M Kreis:

For everyone complaining about the Fulton County case appeal, let me just say that our Court of Appeals has incredibly smart, hard-working, and serious judges. They are good and decent folks by and large. So cool it on your hot takes and conspiracy theories there.

In 1968, massive campus protests against the Vietnam war spread to the Democratic national convention in Chicago that year, which became a violent confrontation between protesters and police. The result was the election of Republican Richard Nixon, who enormously escalated the war, including the invasion and mass bombing of Cambodia.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@lauren The protests did not cause the escalation in the Vietnam war. The corrupt mayor of Chicago ordered the police violence against the protesters. The process of the Convention itself was largely unaffected by the protests. In that era, the Democratic candidate was chosen by party leaders, not by vote of the delegates from each state. Humphrey was a weak candidate put forward by people who did not recognize nor accept change.

Given statistics on veganism, you have a 95-99% chance that anyone making a moral claim is a selective ethicist. The low rate of ethical veganism further supports my hunch that everyone is a selective ethicist.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@escarpment @shekinahcancook Now I’m confused. Are you talking about descriptive (explanatory) ethics (i.e., post-hoc) or prescriptive ethics (ought, should, must, etc)? “Reality” has little to do with either; laws are more about relative situational power and have only a loose coupling (if any) with ethics. Yes?

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@escarpment @shekinahcancook I really admire the implicit hopefulness in your claim, and I too hope it is true, but my subjective reality (borrowing your metaphor) is that gravity does not necessarily prevail.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@shekinahcancook @escarpment What magical or moral force force does “majority” possess? None really, except what we choose to allow. Majority rule is a relatively recent invention in human society.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@shekinahcancook @escarpment This is a strong philosophical claim about the nature of social reality. It is easier for me to follow if we drop the term “reality” which comes with a lot of baggage. If you say that people will behave as they will, then I must agree. The consequences of doing so are based on power. Power may arise from consensus, but agreement is not always affirmative —plenty of people go along to get along.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@shekinahcancook @escarpment If you substitute “Will of the people” for “consensus” then your argument does not look so democratic.

@escarpment @shekinahcancook We are on the verge of disrupting the stability of Earth’s climate. Once unstable, there is no guarantee that it will return to the same climate equilibrium in which humanity or other life thrives. The geophysical history of Earth shows multiple climate equilibriums. Many remained stable for millions of years. Earth climate is a multi-stable system, potentially moving now towards a new, inhospitable climate equilibrium.

Who has recommendations for best for the value in the US market?

Primary use would be fun and leisure. Want to be able to have good control over human vs electric force to power down for excersize purposes. Not a commuter, not heavy shopping, or anything like that.

My wife and I have never owned electric bikes but have been driving less and less the past few years and would like to get outside together more.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@raf @dukepaaron @shekinahcancook Meeting requirements for a price you can afford? I tend to think of value as categorical — functionality centered. Other people might focus more on reliability, or other attributes.

A bit of an odd request, but I am looking for good books or other sources which describe pre-20th century settlements and societies which are both

(a) located in desert climates, and
(b) exist within fairly high mountain ranges.

I am less interested in the history but more how they worked as a society - including their technology, their lifestyles, and so forth.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@juergen_hubert The Mandara Mountains are defensible terrain and so provide some protection from slavers. This is an isolated region with significant iron ore deposits. Mandara became a center of weapon and tool manufacture that further attracted other tribes and as a result of this intertribal contact it served as a locus for the spread of weapon designs.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@juergen_hubert You might consider the Guduf (Gudupe), a small tribe of the Fali people residing along the border of northeastern Nigeria and Chad. Many tribes objected to domination by the Bornu and Hausa emirates, and later the Fulani (Fulbe), the dominant ethnic group in North Central Africa. During conflict in the 1800’s tribes including the Guduf fled to the Mandara Mountains, hills and valleys.

The thing I am most interested in is time travel. I would be real interested in connecting with people on mastodon that have same interests 👌🏾
I tried writing a book last year but lost interest. Need more inspiration 🙏🏿

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@Jaden3 Here is another diagram that I find helpful in understanding re the speed of light in. It depicts intervals. A cone is positioned on 3D axes. The vertical axis is time, two (for simplicity) horizontal axes are space. The narrowest point of the cone is at the origin; the here and now. inside the cone are called time-like. Outside the cone world lines are space-like. Time travel involves going from time-like to space-like world-lines.

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@Jaden3 is related to faster-than-light travel from inside to outside the spacetime interval light cone. It makes be dizzy trying to interpret multiple world lines using this chart 👆🏼, but it can be done. Have fun!

meltedcheese,
@meltedcheese@c.im avatar

@Jaden3 I enjoyed the “Time Patrol” stories by Poul Anderson, including the novel, “Shield of Time.” I’m not sure if this is where I first heard the idea of time-like vs. light-like vs. space-like trajectories, but if you are going to go then you need to understand the causal implications of messing with world lines!

meltedcheese,

@Jaden3 If you confine speculation to our current understanding of physics, then the opportunities for extraterrestrial contact are slim to none unless we (or they) can manage to create technology to manipulate local spacetime. This is not theoretically prohibited. The proposed Alcubierre Drive is one such:
