woah, i think i was fiddling with my modular synth, listening to burbling noises for a couple of hours but it seemed like minutes...

mkb,

@yougenius Yes! At some point I realized modular is as much about mental health for me as it is anything else.

printf() debugging is too easy. When programming microcontrollers there's "single LED debugging" and also "deduce the internal state of the program from the GPIO waveform"

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@niconiconi @whitequark Sufficiently advanced debugging is indistinguishable from side-channel attacks.

A lot of takes that Prigozhin signed his own death warrant via this deal, which, ironically, is exactly the opposite of what he just did, which is to get his literal death warrant officially unsigned

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@Pwnallthethings Can you expound on that a bit?

To my mind, Prigozhin decided to shoot the moon, took the Queen of Spades, then decided to back out. How does one come back from that?

@EgyptianAphorist @jalcine As somebody who struggled in school even with many advantages, I can only imagine the brains and tenacity of those grads.

Think of how much human potential we are wasting with our absurd level of incarceration. How much further could we be as a society if we didn’t have 1.2 million people behind bars?

1982 me with a brand new computer might have believed someone saying 2023 me would have a computer 6 or so orders of magnitude more powerful.

1982 me would not have believed I’d have that 2023 computer but still be weirdly obsessed with the 1982 one.

There's this ugly hole in the ceiling of the corridor in the apartment building I live in. And it's been bothering me for a while.

With all the hand-wringing about , there's one concern I don't see people discussing:

As we increasingly train using output from other AI, what pathologies will emerge from those feedback loops?

My life is remembering the right etiquette for the right culture and drinking the right amount and knowing what to do in the disaster and wearing the right clothes and makeup and having the right hair and nails done ahead of time, and having the proper media schedule, and knowing which greeting is appropriate, how to code switch, and listening at the right time, and when to be quiet all when carrying the weight of a crisis and catastrophe.

@hacks4pancakes Sorry. I hope you get some rest and that tomorrow is a better day.

I loves me some but am nervous about going this year after they dropped the mask requirement. I can’t find anything about masking for 2023 which suggests they aren’t requiring masks either.

@piebob @darrenbob, are y’all going this year?

I really hate missing the hacker high holidays but don’t want any ronas. Once was enough, thank you very much. Plus I really don’t want to get my parents sick.

Me: I won't discuss business in a room with an Alexa, because Amazon is my business competitor and they eavesdrop.

Various other folks: :flan_eyeroll:

Today: Amazon to pay fine for eavesdropping. https://www.npr.org/2023/06/01/1179381126/amazon-alexa-ring-settlement

    I know I'm not saying anything new or insightful here but wow, Bobby Kotick is a real piece of garbage.

    > Kotick blames scandals on "a very aggressive labor movement"

    > Activision Blizzard CEO denies any systemic issue with harassment, says outside forces trying to destabilize the company

    Scammers are getting cleverer. My spouse was just nearly phished as they caught her by phone just out of the shower with a "fraud alert," and gave her enough information she gave them a little—before realizing they weren't legit. They offered her the first six digits of her card, which means they probably knew the card issuer but not the full number. They wanted her to read the full card and she called foul and then called the issuer, who confirmed nobody had called, and hard card replaced.

    mkb,
    @mkb@mastodon.social avatar

    @glennf Thanks for the heads up!

    Unless folks have worked with payment card security () they often don’t realize the first six digits are often handled like the last four. They don’t require the same level of security precautions as the full card number to they are more likely to show up in breaches.

    Also, the first six (called the BIN) are potentially deducible based on other personal info because they follow a consistent format designating card brand, etc.

    @June I use a digitech jamman. It's a fairly affordable loop pedal and isn't the best possible audio quality when stacking lots of loops but you can definitely do that with it.

    I have the two pedal version which they discontinue but there's a single pedal one which I'm sure is fine.

    There may well be better options too but this one is viable.

    mkb,
    @mkb@mastodon.social avatar

    @fry @June There is a lovely iOS that does this called Loopy.

    In this demo you can see some of the mechanics as does his thing:
