@mattblaze For purposes of your (most excellent) photography and CC license is a crop a derivative work?

I ask because several shots look like they’d be great to accompany one of my tracks on Soundcloud but would need to be cropped square (assuming the composition still works).

No offense taken if the answer is that a crop would violate the license. They’re your photos, after all. :)

I know this is an unpopular opinion, especially here on the open social web, but I really don’t think the longtime copyright protection for the Walt Disney mouse cartoon dampened American artistry or creativity.

mkb,

@deangiberson @JamesGleick Just so. Think of Mickey as a poster child.

Certainly in music the harm is broad and demonstrable.

Due to the extremely large number of basic functions "systemd" has usurped from other parts of the OS, a natural and interesting project would be to see if systemd can now exist independently apart from Linux, or rather, to ascertain what is the most minimal alternate kernel that could serve as a life support system for successfully running systemd. Since calling this "System System" would be absurd, the most logical name for such a project would be "d OS", or "DOS". In this Mastodon post I will

I am repeating my request for a term to describe the confluence of confirmation bias and schadenfreude.

That is, I irrationally dislike Foo, news comes out that Foo is bad in some way, then I feel smugly justified in my irrational dislike as though I knew all along.

(See Substack.)

Surely someone has already coined a term for this. @grammargirl, have you any thoughts?

I'm back to make one more comment (yes, I have a book to finish!)

Here is the problem with the fact that there is no collective memory on social media.

When Jack Smith moved for a cert before judgment, pundits were like "What a great idea! I didn't think of that!"

(Personally, I assumed that the appellate court would move fast, and SCOTUS would either deny cert or refuse to stay the trial.)

Now that the motion that nobody anticipated was denied everyone is like THE SKY IS FALLING.

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield Part of the issue is simply that there’s a lot we layfolk don’t know about the law. (I guess that’s true by definition or we’d all sit for the bar.)

A year or so when SCOTUS denied cert on something with a single sentence and no explanation, that looked to me like a stern rebuke. A lawyer friend had to explain to me that is simply how those denials are done.

"Hurting fascist's income doesn't work", says the fuckers making money off fascists.

"Blocking or banning fascists just makes things worse", says the asshats who profit off the controversies.

"Fascist speech must be protected because of free speech", says the ignorant bastards who don't care about actual freedom.

I am so fucking tired of these cowardly shit goblins.

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@Kalshann @rysiek What saddens me is there is actual research on the effects of deplatforming.

Some of the “deplatforming doesn’t work” arguments are reasonable on their face but research shows deplatforming is effective despite the downsides.

Any people know if botnets specifically of GPU servers are a thing? Based on what I'm looking at, I assume they are. Are they used for crypto, password cracking , or something else?

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@simon When it’s free, compute is compute.

I’d expect most botnets to just use whatever hosts they manage to occupy. With a large enough botnet I suppose you could identify hosts with significant GPU power and partition them to sell as a premium service.

I’ve not heard of that happening but it is vaguely plausible.

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@simon Sounds like you found one then!

Congrats and condolences, both. I hope the cleanup is not too bad. If you’re in the US, that is worth reporting to FBI and/or CISA.

    8 track tape was seriously weird. Because it divided albums into quarters rather than sides, songs would typically span the 1-2 and 3-4 transitions. The result was a mid-song hiccup. Plus there was no rewind, only fast forward.

    REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

    Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

    mkb,
    @mkb@mastodon.social avatar

    @cstross @spaf To be fair, my work running #InfoSec programs largely comes down to stochastic regurgitation. We mostly see the same problems and situations from company to company.

    hello fediverse, here's my new infographic comparing two dynamics we can nurture when doing things: security theater vs.

    it's meant as a handy reference to validate that your org's security efforts are nurturing resilience rather than fomenting theater (and I don't mean writing your design docs in iambic pentameter, that's fine)

    imo security theater is one of the core pillars holding up the status quo of security-as-gatekeeper... so let's do resilience instead <3

    @shortridge This is great!
