Analysis

"Nearly 100% of Campus Gaza Protests Have Been Peaceful"

Of 553 US campus protests, 97% remained non-violent.

Of the 3%, half were from clashes with police sent in to clear peaceful protests.

"If someone is speaking more about 'violent encampments' than they are about violent genocide of the Palestinians, they have a problem reflective of deep and dangerous biases."

@DrALJONES
I heard some of them were calling to exterminate some people based on their nationality, religion, and place of birth. Instead of suing those who break the law.
Not judging about the peace level, but calling for putting someone to death seems to be illegal in many countries, in particular, where these protests had been.

I have a foot…! …of the SLIM lunar lander. This is one of the 3D printed aluminium lattice spacecraft feet that was used for testing (described to me as “almost a flight model”!). The feet are designed to crumple to help SLIM withstand the impact of landing. While the Moon’s gravity is only 1/6 of that of the Earth, SLIM was expected to experience a load of up to 2 tons upon touchdown. It’s a bit prickly. Like a foot hedgehog.

nk,
@nk@sns.neonka.info avatar

@elizabethtasker
Maybe they even provided an expected velocity of the landing impact?

nk,
@nk@sns.neonka.info avatar

@elizabethtasker
Thank you!
Then maybe do you know what was the height when they turned off the engines?

nk,
@nk@sns.neonka.info avatar

@elizabethtasker
Interesting.
So, we may assume the impact was with V not less than 2 m/s?
And most probably it can handle the impact via crumpling ~0.15 m.

    📣 Encrypt. Now.

    "We have come to a point where end-to-end encrypting all your private data and private communications is no longer an ethical option, but an ethical duty.

    Imagine a new law was being discussed in your country to make it mandatory that all buildings have glass walls. All houses would be transparent. The (stated) goal of the law is to make it harder for criminals to hide their wrongdoings. [...]"

    By "all houses" it means literally all of them? Including police, FBI, tax service, government, army, etc.? Especially, those who promote this law. In principle, sounds nice

    Remember set up new on-by-default sharing of your account information with every other Patreon user (and maybe the world)? Remember people posting how to turn it off, because they were using confusing language/dark patterns to try to you into oversharing?

    I got the "welcome to the new Patreon" today, and ... they've turned the "Community Profile" setting back on after I deliberately turned it off.

    Go check your settings, and opt out -- again.

    Hug your today.

    There's a lot of shit flying in the lately and a lot of times perspective seems to get lost. Yes, there are things we need to talk about, and yes there are things we will not agree on. And that's okay.

    But leave the pitchforks and torches out of this.

    Fedi admins put in the hours and effort and emotion into making fedi happen. Sometimes they make decisions we might not agree with. We should criticize, but we should not pile-on.

    nk,
    @nk@sns.neonka.info avatar

    @rysiek

    Some fedi admins make fedi happen, others break fedi. Not all of them are good, and not all of them are bad.
    If you want to choose your community and who can talk to you then you don't need someone else to do this work. There is no need for fedi admins if you use a single-user instance.

    If so many admins put so much effort into making decisions for other people then let's decentralize this case too. Let's get rid of admins at all. And let everyone decide.

    I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

    The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

    If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

    The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

    @nk@sns.neonka.info avatar

    @witchescauldron
    @dimitrisk @tchambers

    Bad idea.
    Look, you promote bad tools for a more or less good approach. You promote staying on a random server, whose owner you don't know, with people you don't know, just making an illusion of a theme community.
    And after they will find out that this server is not good for them, they will figure out they cannot transfer their posts to another server.
    Let people organize themselves in communities without an owner — let them run their own servers and recommend people to start following.

    nk,
    @nk@sns.neonka.info avatar

    @dimitrisk
    @witchescauldron @tchambers

    I believe it shall be the only reasonable option, stating that other public servers are temporary and one cannot transfer the messages.
