Who owns Bluesky? What’s the role of former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey? What’s Bluesky’s business model? And what prevents another Elon Musk from buying and destroying it 10 years down the line?

@micahflee answers some of your Bluesky questions. https://theintercept.com/2023/06/01/bluesky-owner-twitter-elon-musk/

@micahflee
If you are correct and every instance is expected to host all the data from all other instances, then:

  1. what a huge waste of resources;
  2. what an incredibly high barrier for anyone trying to create an instance.
    @vegetarianzombie @DemocracySpot @Mastodon
nunesgh,
@nunesgh@mastodon.social avatar

@amanda
2.A) As AT Protocol usage increases, the bare minimum amount of storage capacity required to just start a new instance would be equal to the whole amount of data in the federation. This would only increase over time. Suppose Bluesky Social gets as big as Twitter. Then every new instance would be required to at least replicate the entire storage infrastructure of Twitter just to start running.
@micahflee @vegetarianzombie @DemocracySpot @Mastodon

nunesgh,
@nunesgh@mastodon.social avatar

@amanda
I don't know what you mean by 'better consistency'.
In any case, I see 2) as an issue for new instances of any size. Consider the following two scenarios.
@micahflee @vegetarianzombie @DemocracySpot @Mastodon

nunesgh,
@nunesgh@mastodon.social avatar

@amanda
2.B) Suppose an already existing large network, say Twitter or Facebook, decide to adopt AT Protocol. Suddenly the total amount of data in the federation increases by orders of magnitude. This would mean all the other AT Protocol instances would need to replicate the entire storage infrastructure of the newcomer large network. Not to mention the necessary network bandwidth for the data transfer.
@micahflee @vegetarianzombie @DemocracySpot @Mastodon

nunesgh,
@nunesgh@mastodon.social avatar

@amanda
In both scenarios, 2) would be a problem for instances of any size. 2.B) could easily cause Bluesky Social to be unable to federate due to lack of resources.
If @micahflee is correct, AT Protocol will be totally useless for federation purposes.

We have suspended access to the account associated with Newsmax, a far-right disinformation outlet from the US, and have limited (silenced) the 'newsie.social' instance as a whole for platforming such nonsense, including the rejection of all media from that instance.

If you are a news outlet, we strongly recommend that you move to your own instance, as others, including The Markup and the Texas Observer, have already done.

    It was not you. This was a change on Mastodon version 4, if I'm not mistaken. The previous flow for following on browsers, with a pop-up window, was more intuitive, I agree. But I don't know what motivated the change. Maybe pop-up blocking by browsers? In any case, the flow on mobile apps has always been better, in my opinion.

    First, is illegal in . You cannot walk around wearing a swastika or be part of a group. You are going to be prosecuted for that.

    Then, in November last year, a teenager killed four people and hurt twelve more in a school-shooting. Earlier in April, a man invaded a kindergarten and killed four children.

    After the second episode, on April 14, the government released an ordinance for social networks due to school violence.
