Today I was out with Jax the dog delivering eggs (he's an excellent copilot). We were stopped at a red light and I looked over at the car next to me. Behind the wheel was a woman and next to her was her trusty copilot, a dog the same size as Jax.

I was smiling at this scene when she looked over at me and suddenly I realized what I must look like up in my truck, grinning over sunglasses at her. So I grabbed Jax and held him up to the window and she burst into laughter. Crisis averted.

@fraying they’re good dogs!

And yeah, I’d totally do the same thing. I’m glad I’m not the only one who is hyper aware of how things may be perceived by other folk and attempting to alleviate misunderstandings and fears.

Hey nerds… I have a newton MP 2000 upgraded to a 2100 that I used as my laptop back in the day. The digitiser no longer works (ie, no tapping). What are my options for getting it fixed, and am I bonkers for wanting to try?

I’m convinced the person who said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ never didn’t have money.

Money can totally buy happiness. Happiness is a fleeting surface-level emotion. I’m happy when I have chocolate.

Money can’t buy the feeling of being emotionally fulfilled, but that’s totally different.

Gods, I just had flashbacks to when we would set up databases like Sybase And Oracle on raw block devices.

Now the kids just write to text files in the native file system usr partition.

Wild.

Damn.

Guess we’ll be talking about this on “The Dalrymple Report” we record tomorrow:

Jim:
“Siri has done what no person could for 30 years: Make me stop using an Apple product.

I am giving up on my 8 HomePods/minis out of the sheer frustration of trying to use Siri.

I’ve been in tech for 30 years and this is one of the worst technologies ever and only getting worse”

😮

octothorpe,
@octothorpe@mastodon.online avatar

@davemark wow. That’s rough.

I am VERY curious how Jim got into that position. I mean, Siri sucked balls when he only had 1 home pod.

Hullo Designers and UX practitioners!

Awhile back on Twitter, I wrote a small thread called "Notes for UI Designers Who Have Lost Their Way". Recently @louie asked if I brought it over here yet.

Well, here is the original post. I'm hoping it will engender a great discussion as it did on Twitter, as these issues still exist.

octothorpe,
@octothorpe@mastodon.online avatar

@jwilker @louie What an unexpected delight!

octothorpe,
@octothorpe@mastodon.online avatar

@jackbrewster @louie There's a notion that "the content should be king"… except that only really works in situations where you're passively consuming it. If you need to actually operate on it, YOU NEED VISIBLE CONTROLS AND AFFORDANCES. It's fucking maddening.

@davemark@mastodon.social avatar

Curious about your views on piracy:

  • OK to share your Netflix password with your family? Friend?
  • OK to use a VPN to watch a game that is blacked out in your area?
  • OK to use a VPN to bypass licenses, say, to watch content in another country?

Any and all thoughts...

octothorpe,
@octothorpe@mastodon.online avatar

@davemark ‘do I routinely violate licences that don’t serve me that has no real impact on society?’ Generally yes.

Do I pay for physical media? Yes. Do I violate copyright for my personal use? All the time.

Do I support violent takeovers of ships on the high seas? No.

Going through old photos from my iPhone era (the gap between my Canon era and my Fuji era) for Reasons and I’m finding that I prefer the rendering of the iPhone 6 plus to my current phone, the 13

The photos from the 13 constantly feel bland, oversharp, and generic

Another photo from the riverside in Bath. This time colour. An old building juts out from the banks of the river in a weird way.
A photo taken several years ago in the geothermal are near the town of Grindavík. A group of tourists are walking along a ridge in the distance.
We look up a cathedral to see the silhouette of a gull above

octothorpe,
@octothorpe@mastodon.online avatar

@baldur yeah. It’s because they’re increasing edge contrast artificially bs optically. The pixels captured on an iPhone are still potato-level if you zoom in, and this is meant to compensate. You can’t overcome physics with processing.

Personally, I’d rather less processing and a larger sensor. Maybe fewer megapixels. I think also, most people don’t feel that way.

My guess: may have someone like co-signing Chubb bond, so the bank is comfortable being on the hook for the judgment. Same could happen for the bond for AG $450M judgment. & this strategy wd allow co-signor to say truthfully that they did not give or loan Trump any $

Joyce Vance:

This=important pt. Trump is beholden to someone & we don't know who. Reporters shd ask him to explain all of the details. GOP leaders shd, but probably won't be esp concerned.
