@bastianallgeier Also ich hab keine Recherche vorher betrieben über die genaue Bilanz, aber mir ist nicht klar, warum Milch nicht einer Mehrweg-Flasche sein sollte. Finde sehr fragwürdig, statt einer recyclebaren Verpackung, die in wenigen Jahren zu Sand wird, ein Plastik zu nehmen, was uns noch Jahrtausende Probleme machen wird. Denke die Energie für die Reinigung kann in Zukunft komplett grün werden? 🤔

@ivory I read about the change to image attachments in regard to captions → alt text and they seem like a good change, but I immediately thought of many captions I have on my pictures that would leak private info to the web! Just using the caption text without a confirmation step seems potentially … dangerous? 🤔 How about prompt like "would you like to use caption text 'x' as alt text?" Yes/No

Over the summer I didn't have time to do a proper watchOS 10 redesign for Pedometer++. I am now tackling that project, which is actually much easier now that I've actually lived with watchOS 10's redesign for several months.

Something I found super helpful was to take a screenshot of every screen in the app and lay out the current UI hierarchy, which when I see it laid out like this is a bit of a mess. But I couldn't tell how much of a mess without the perspective of seeing it all at once.

@_Davidsmith I don't exactly know about iOS, but my impression was that San Francisco existed as a variable font, where you can specify weight in 1/1000 increments, no? The weight you're describing should be about 550?

Not a huge fan of most AI stuff, but this is great.

I did that to the street I used to live in in Mannheim and the results are pretty cool. They are more like a mood board than proper infrastructure suggestions, but I think it's all about the feeling!

AI added a lot of plants and a nice park bench in the foreground. The asphalt has been replaced by cobblestone to give it a far nicer look.
In this version, AI also replaced the asphalt with cobblestones, but this one keeps the street without too much plants. Instead there are tables on for restaurants at the side and there are a lot of pedestrians on the street.
AI added a large strip of flowers and bushes to the middle of the street and replaced the asphalt with cobblestones.

I bought a bunch of Shelly plugs to measure the energy consumption of various appliances in our household. Now I'm very disappointed in our coffee machine and also quite astonished how standby mode basically means "I'm still on, I just pretend I'm not"

Let’s (try to) crowdsource the names of the original apps and games!

I’m writing a piece on the App Store turning 15, and I couldn’t find a list of the original ~500 App Store apps and games from 11 July 2008, which I thought was strange. @jamesthomson, whose PCalc was there from the start, suggested we might be able to crowdsource this, for posterity and future research.

While I’m mentioning it (see previous post), just another shoutout for @feedbin. I’ve been using it as my RSS sync service since 2013, as both s replacement for Google Reader and Fever (RIP to my self-hosted love of loves). There are other sync services out there that I’m sure are terrific but https://feedbin.com has served me well for a very long time!

@film_girl A while back, I updated/patched my personal installation of Fever to run on PHP 8 and SQLite. I tried to get a hold of Shaun so he'd approve of me distributing the update, but no luck so far.

Still use it with Reeder to this day.

Heute beim Einkaufen mit dem Rad fiel mir der Unterschied zwischen "gemäht" und "ungemäht" so richtig ins Auge. Rechts blühen sogar noch etliche Arten. Links ist alles tot, auch für Kleintiere und Insekten ist hier nichts zu holen. Wozu mähen? Sieht das schöner aus? Hat die gemähte Fläche irgendeinen Vorteil, auf den ich nicht komme?

For years I’ve travelled with an external battery with an iPhone and Apple Watch cable. I just realized that the combination of the Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro’s battery life have meant I haven’t used it once in the last year.

Not sure if I’d feel comfortable not bringing it at all but a milestone to even consider it.

@daringfireball Admittedly, I'm not an expert on ActivityPub, but what I would expect Meta do do in this place is, be compatible with the 'consume' part. Follow Mastodon accounts, but silo off their own accounts, so Mastodon users can't follow them. And there won't be RSS feeds, for good measure. I don't know this is possible, but 'compatible' really can mean anything.

Why am I still on mastodon.social? Because I have too many good choices:

  • front-end.social is a very nice server I feel drawn to
  • mastodon.design has a lot of interesting people and a great admin
  • mastodon.green is close to my heart because of the topic
  • hosting my own instance at something like masto.host is the end goal but too much effort right now.
