The English supermarket chain Iceland has a store in Oslo and I’ve never seen it in a worse state.
Half the freezers are empty, a bunch of them are unplugged and pushed to the corner. Empty shelves in a lot of places. Costs about £4 for a Freddo. It looks like it’s on the brink of shutting down.
@matt meanwhile in the UK, local Morrisons is putting beer & bread in some empty shelves, even removing some shelves entirely to try and hide government created shortages
I think Cory Doctorow's paradigm of enshittification (#e14n) is a very good one. I have one quibble with it. Like any very good paradigm – as was explained by the dude who coined the term "paradigm" (Kuhn) – because it is an excellent explanation it tends to force out all the other explanations.
In particular there was a class of explanation that I think is also important to be aware of, and it's one that I think is less compelling for reasons good and bad.
It is appealing to us to believe that the behaviors of others are rational. Thus it is appealing to us to believe that others' behavior is explainable by the profit motive, because what could be more rational to us, in our present society, than wanting to make more money?
The e14n paradigm is thus a very appealing explanatory hypothesis. It fits our biases. It's a kind of explanation that we like to find.
Am I the only one who remembers that time that #Facebook lied about their video #engagement numbers to convince an entire industry to pivot to video, only to find out it wasn't profitable, and then had to lay off a whole lot of staff?
That makes me a little suspicious of their #threads user count right now.
Most mastodon instances should be dedicated to a specific topic (like fosstodon to free and open source software) to take advantage of the local timeline. This #fediquette is currently being largely ignored.
