Many yearn for the "good old days" of the web. We could have those good old days back — or something even better — and if anything, it would be easier now than it ever was.
The #citationneeded conversation must distinguish between data and information. There are many ways to create data that is non-informative, and much of the data being collected and generated is exactly that: it exists in a world of "garbage in garbage out". But the parts we care about and are presumed to have exchange value are generally informative. "Owning" has a great deal to do with the narrative of the information and who is ascribed agency, credit, blame or responsibility in the narrative.
Review: In "Read Write Own", the Andreessen Horowitz general partner and web3 superfan Chris Dixon lays out an unconvincing argument that blockchains are what it will take to fix the web.
You can also configure the sidenotes now too, if you want to turn them off, see just footnotes (the default), show references in the sidenotes as well, etc.
This week: the aftermath of the #Bitcoin ETF approval, #Coinbase tells a judge that crypto's kind of like beanie babies, and an e-pastor says the Lord told him to run a crypto scam.

Indeed. I never read molly white’s blog because it’s not open.. #Cloudflare is an exclusive walled garden that excludes me.
#CitationNeeded has the same problem as #substack so nothing changes for me. It’s still in the portion of web that’s dark to proponents of an open free web. @ben@molly0xfff
The "effective altruism" and "effective accelerationism" ideologies that have been cropping up in AI debates are just a thin veneer over the typical blend of Silicon Valley techno-utopianism, inflated egos, and greed. Let's try something else.
Both effective altruism and effective accelerationism embrace as a given the idea of a super-powerful artificial general intelligence being just around the corner, an assumption that leaves little room for discussion of the many ways that AI is harming real people today.
Effective accelerationism has found an ally in Marc Andreessen, but his recent manifesto exposes that he just wants to go back to the old days when tech founders were uncritically revered, and when obstacles between him and staggering profits were nearly nonexistent.
Anyone know what the #water hardness is in for northern metro Melbourne in °dH or mmol/l? My dishwasher says it needs salt if it's above 0.9mmol/l or 5°dH.
Yarra Valley Water says it's between 7-29 mg/L, but that's kinda useless since I don't know what the actual chemicals involved are, nor can I remember how to actually do the #stoichiometry or whatever—I absolutely hated it at uni and don't intend to remember just because my dishwasher is blinking its LED at me.
@koberulz it's basically the amount of Calcium and Magnesium Carbonates dissoved in the water. I think it has to do with how much limestone is in your local aquifer. Water hardness is a problem for things like boilers, coffee machines and dishwashers because it results in the buildup of scale, or for aquariums and home brewers who need to know the water chemistry.
If you live in #naarm the geology seems to be predominantly sandstone and basalt #CitationNeeded and so the water is quite soft, so unless you keep tropical fish, brew beer or actually read the manual that comes with the dishwasher the water hardness isn't generally anything you need to worry about.
