So, today is a national holiday in . Anniversary of our first constitution, 1791. That never really worked, because… and this may be interesting for readers in other countries.

For hundreds of years Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was quite democratic state, for the time and place at least. Our kings were elected by popular vote (that is, by all nobility. More than 10% of society at the time, much more that typical elsewhere), the candidates had to present their programs beforehand, swear by it before coronation, and were held responsible before Parliament. The lower house of Parlament consisted of delegates chosen by popular (same note as before) vote in their lands, and were bound by voters' instructions; that is, they could deviate from them, if needed, but then had to explain the decision back home. Upper house was crewed by high-level state and church officials, no hereditary seats. To ensure that nobody's rights were denied, nor voice silenced, there was institution of veto, that had to be taken back by the one who stated it – after the settlement was reached.

Oh, and speaking of nobility – its structure was flat. A noble was a citizen, as good as any other. No formal aristocracy, no range ladder, no titles (some boasted, usually foreign, titles of barons, dukes, counts, whatever; it was a matter of courtesy to address them using these titles, but nothing more). Sure, there were differences of power, of wealth, of connections – just like in today's democratic societies. Any noble was eligible for any state office, including the throne. Any noble was entitled to vote (or not).

Of course, it always could be better – for example, cities were strongly underrepresented, and peasants not represented at all (formally they were, by ”their” lord, but such representation did not make them much good). System was clearly not ideal, but worked for long time — and I dare to say, for citizens it was better than absolutism so popular elsewhere. So how did it fail, and fail to the level of the state itself disappearing?

Well, dear reader in one of democratic states of today. Have you heard that simple message, that “taxes are bad”? That any attempt to curb oligarchs/barons/magnates influence is an attack on your rights? That every reform is just disguised plan to “take away your traditional freedoms”? That only warmongers want army, because who would attack us and why? Have you seen state organs paralyzed by seemingly absurd obstruction, with no real reason and no attempt to negotiate any settlement? Heard loud voices to abstain from voting, because it's futile? Seen random candidates out of nowhere, with history of enormous debts, but somehow having truckloads of cash for propaganda? Welcome to 18th century Commonwealth, then.

Finally we managed to get to senses. Rewrite laws. Vote a new constitution. It was too little and too late by then, and those who paid for all preceding paragraph took the ripe fruit. There was a war, so short that almost nobody remembers it, so ridiculously it was lost. Uprising. Another one. And another. It took, let me count… about two hundred years, ten uprisings (not sure if I counted all of them), multiple wars (including two world ones), two revolutions…

One of our then-neighbours has two hundred years of experience more in ”how to deal with democracies” field. You are at war. You just don't know it yet.

    I always think it's funny when right-wing types get mad at Star Wars for becoming "woke." They didn't notice the obvious fascist imagery? They didn't realize that they were the villains in this whole cinematic universe? So unobservant! I would never make that mistake! I'd know if I was the villain in a whole cinematic universe!

    Anyway, I can't wait to watch the second installment of Dune! What'll happen next in Arrakis(Iraq)? Will the spice(oil) flow? Will Paul's Jihad topple the empire(us)?

    @mwl @mekkaokereke Interesting note about "Vader". The spelling is indeed similar (Vater). That still never occurred to me as a possibility since the pronunciation is so different. Whereas the main difference in pronunciation between the German "Vater" and the English "father" is swapping "t" and "th".

    2015 lehnten noch 13 Prozent der Männer in Deutschland eine „weiter gehende Gleichstellungspolitik“ ab, diese Gruppe ist bis 2023 auf 22 Prozent angewachsen.

    Im FT-Artikel verortet der Autor den Beginn der wachsenden politischen Kluft zwischen jungen Frauen und Männern in der -Bewegung, die Frauen feministisch empowered und somit stärker ins progressive Lager bewegt habe. Die andere Seite der Analyse muss jedoch sein, dass die offene Ablehnung feministischer Ideen in den vergangenen Jahren eine große Bühne bekommen hat. Möglicherweise geht die Strategie der Antifeministen in AfD, Union und von anderer Organisationen und Personen wie beliebten, misogynen Kaberettisten auf: Sie markieren über endlos wiederholte Kritik an u.a. geschlechtergerechter Sprache immer wieder politische Gleichstellungsbemühungen als übertriebene oder bevormundende Ideen – bis dies tatsächlich in größere Ablehnung von politischen Maßnahmen umschlägt.

    @Kalliope @Openhuman @knud @SheDrivesMobility Super Sache! Statt einer einkommensabhängigen Auszahlung wäre ich dafür das Klimageld der Einkommenssteuer zu unterwerfen. Reduziert evtl. die (zusätzliche) soziale Komponente, dürfte aber deutlich einfach umzusetzen sein.

You might have heated about the recent discussions about being denied to take on (almost) any debt (Schuldenbremse, literally debt break). Adding this concept to the constitution happened during her time in office.

    @tzimmer_history Is “militant democracy” the usual translation of “wehrhafte Demokratie”? To me it has a different ring, probably because it is obviously closer to “military”.

    Conda is neat and so, but oh-my, it wreaks havoc with users' Linux accounts, changing include and library paths, causing all type of conflicts (e.g. ld: cannot find -lxml2: No such file or directory)

    Many users just find a 'conda install' command online and cut'n'paste it. Unless the user understands the error messages, they end up with lots of trial and errors, sometimes making things worse.

    Conda is by far++ the most common cause of compilation and run-time errors I see on HPC environments

    So tomorrow there are national elections in The Netherlands and I need to acquaint you with two oddities. For one, we take our democracy entirely for granted so we mostly vote in.. garbage bins. Secondly, our ballots are HUGE as they list 28 parties and 1128 candidates (no joke). So we need to make good use of the space in the garbage bin. For this purpose, polling stations are equipped with the STEMBUSSTAMPER, specially designed to tamp down wayward ballots:

    The stembusstamper is a longish piece of wood that fits through the slot meant for ballots. It allows one to tamp down wayward ballots so there is more room in the ballot box.

    @bert_hubert How does one interact with these candidates? Can one vote for them individually?
    The craziest thing I have seen in that regard are regional elections in Bavaria. If your local council has say 40 seats, you get 40 votes. You can just spend them on a single party, but you can also give individual candidates up to 3 votes, even from multiple parties. And if you don't want to give out all votes individually, you can give all the remaining votes to a party list. Typically takes several days to count properly ...

    Also jetzt haben wir wieder die Diskussion, dass Personalisierung und Emotionalisierung ne hilfreiche und sachliche Diskussion komplett ausgehebelt haben. Und dann heißt es aber, dass man bei solchen komplizierten Themen aber Personalisierung und Emotionalisierung braucht, um das journalistisch zugänglich zu machen.
    Also ist bei manchen Themen hilfreiche mediale Berichterstattung in der Breite eigentlich gar nicht mehr realistisch?

    @Fischblog Auf jeden Fall sehr schwierig! Wenn eine Seite auf Basis von Lügen emotionalisiert, so ist es nicht ausreichend "nur" diese Lügen aufzuzeigen. Vielmehr braucht es eine emotionale aber auf Tatsachen beruhende Gegenerzählung. Und dabei ist es schon weit schwieriger auf sachlicher Ebene die Lüge zu wiederlegen als selbige in die Welt zu bringen. Es ist zum verzweifeln ...

    @teresabuecker Ich versuche mir das so zu erklären:

    • Im Zuge der Polykrise haben viele das Gefühl etwas zu verlieren. Und sie haben damit Recht!
    • Das radikalisiert viele in Richtung derer, die einfache Lösungen anbieten. Einfache Lösungen, die ein weiter so versprechen.
    • Als Politiker hast Du die Wahl mit diesem Strom zu schwimmen oder Dich dagegen zu stellen.
    • Letzteres hält nur durch, wer eine positive Vision der Zukunft hat.
    • Diese Zukunftsvision ist den meisten Politikern abhanden gekommen.
    • Also mit dem Strom in die Radikalisierung.

    Ich finde es super, wie viele teils selbstverwaltete journalistische (Online-)Projekte entstehen, die investigative Arbeit finanzieren.

    Weniger gut finde ich, dass die mehrheitlich nicht über Bibliotheken verfügbar sind.

    New releases of the packages {dqrng} and {tikzDevice} have made it unto . While the latter release has only minor internal changes, dqrng now comes with two new functions dqrrademacher for drawing Rademacher weights and dqrmvnorm for drawing from a multivariate normal distribution.

    In addition, the C++ templates used by the fast sampling methods are now in their own header file allowing for parallel usage.

    I went out today to shoot mostly landscape and architecture, you know, low stress stuff to get the hang of this old camera. But then I befriended a crow and had an extended shoot with them. 🖤

    Can’t wait to see how these pictures turned out.
