New releases of the packages {dqrng} and {tikzDevice} have made it unto . While the latter release has only minor internal changes, dqrng now comes with two new functions dqrrademacher for drawing Rademacher weights and dqrmvnorm for drawing from a multivariate normal distribution.

In addition, the C++ templates used by the fast sampling methods are now in their own header file allowing for parallel usage.

My aim to support weighted sampling needs to be postponed a bit, though. More details at https://stubner.me/2023/08/dqrng-v0-3-1-and-tikzdevice-v0-12-5/

I went out today to shoot mostly landscape and architecture, you know, low stress stuff to get the hang of this old camera. But then I befriended a crow and had an extended shoot with them. 🖤

Can’t wait to see how these pictures turned out.

@esther There was a great thread by @ct_bergstrom on befriending crows. Obviously I cannot find it right now …

An opioid expert from Texas A&M gave a guest lecture and mentioned that Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick’s policies were costing lives. Within hours, Patrick’s office got her suspended, formally censured, and nearly fired.

@vicgrinberg Current situation as well as the outlook are scary indeed. Two recent encounters in that direction:
Adam Tooze at Jung&Naiv calling the current German 🚦government the most progressive in any larger western country. https://overcast.fm/+2unqQvDU8

Thorsten Frei’s idea to end individual asylum rights in Europe might be a minority position in Germany but not in Europe, c.f. today’s “Was jetzt?” podcast https://overcast.fm/+KYYSBYToM

So frustrating…

This is astonishing coverage of the from the Guardian. Typhoons, heatwaves, and wildfires from all over the northern hemisphere are brought together in a stark vision of the current crisis.

How does manifest itself? Like Hemingway's bankruptcy: gradually, and then suddenly.

esther, to photography

Back home, unpacked. So, here's the thing that might get me back to analog photography: A Rolleiflex S66 medium format SLR released in 1966 that @jillpls had sitting in a closet since forever. This one was probably manufactured in the 70s, judging by the serial number.

It has some technical issues though: the mechanism seems stuck in the "released" position with the mirror flipped up and the film transport crank locked. I'll try to get it fixed and hopefully this beauty can have a second chance.

If anyone knows an address in Berlin where I can get it looked at by someone who knows this camera's mechanism well, that'd be much appreciated. I'd rather not try to fix this myself. Would be a shame to ruin this device by accident.

Same camera viewed from the front with the Planar 80mm f/2.8 lens clearly visible

@tshirtman @davidho I had the same questions. Things that could contribute:

  • A huge portion of CO2 is absorbed by the oceans, but that probably takes time.
  • The plants from the northern hemisphere take up a lot of CO2, but mainly in spring and summer.
Not sure how important these effects are.
