Women at War

Considered too old to be a war correspondent during World War I, photographer Horace Nicholls aimed his camera lens on the homefront capturing the many contributions of the women who took over the workforce - including the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC)

Passing Time

A Photo Series by Sage Sohier

"During the isolation of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to revisit my archive of negatives and contact sheets from the 1980s, and discovered a number of interesting images that I had never printed. These photographs were made between 1979-1985 in a pre-digital, largely un-air-conditioned era, when people fled the heat of their houses to hang out in their yards and on the street. I notice a kind of relaxed sensuality in many of the pictures. Time moved more slowly; restlessness led to spontaneous play."

Leap to Freedom

On August 15, 1961, Konrad Schumann, 19, was on guard in East Berlin where they had started to construct the Berlin Wall. Schumann waited as fellow soldiers left his side and then stepped on the barbed wire pretending to check it. A crowd gathered on the other side ...

A West German police car stopped ten meters away from the wall with a door open. Schumann smoked nervously before gathering the courage to make the leap, tossing off his gun and jumping to the other side he quickly scrambled into the waiting car. The entire incident took six seconds.

Photographer Peter Leibing was the same age as Schumann. The nervous soldier standing close to the fence smoking one cigarette after another caught his attention. The photographer installed a camera and focused on the barbed wire and then stood across from the soldier for one and a half hours, watching afraid to blink.

Leiblings resulting photo garnered a lot of attention and inspired a statue to memorialize the event ... Schumann's story was not to end as happily. He worried that he couldnโ€™t get in touch with his family and he believed that Stasi agents from the GDR were following him, blaming Leibingโ€™s photograph that made him famous and prevented him from blending in, in Western Germany.

Femmes Algรฉriennes, 1960

As a young man Marc Garanger had put off his departure for the French army as long as possible, hoping that the war in Algeria, which he objected to, would soon end. When his luck ran out he was asigned a position as regiment photographer.

The French army destroyed mountain villages where they suspected Algerian resistance, transfering the population to regroupment villages - concentration camps. Here the military determined that the displaced people would be required to have identity cards.

"Either I refused and went to prison, or I accepted. I understood my luck: it was to be a witness, to make pictures of what I saw that mirrored my opposition to the war. I saw that I could use what I was forced to do, and have the pictures tell the opposite of what the authorities wanted them to tell.โ€

The women, Berber or Muslim, had never had contact with Europeans. They were made to sit on a stool in front a wall without their veils, exposing their hair and tattoos.

"In a period of ten days, I made two thousand portraits, two hundred a day. The women had no choice in the matter. Their only way of protesting was through their look.โ€

Portrait of Aboriginal Artist Linda Syddick Napaltjarri
Linda's Dreaming Paintings were inspired by her nomadic life in the desert, and the Dreaming of her father and stepfather. Linda's father died when Linda was about 18 months old; her stepfather, artist Lankata Shorty Tjungurrayi, raised her and before he died in 1985, he asked Linda to carry on his work and paint his Dreaming.

Submerged Portraits

A Photo Series by South African Photographer Gideon Mendel exploring the impact of climate change on populations around the world. A project that began in 2007 with flood disasters in Britain and India, has since expanded to catastrophic rains in Haiti, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil - all pictured here.

The poses are meant to be conventional - while the environment is anything but. The faces tell the story.

Sandra Hรผller

I watched two films this week with wonderful performances by German Actress Sandra Hรผller.

In Zone of Interest she plays Helga, wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Hรถss. In Anatomy of a Fall, a film written specifically for her, she plays a woman suspected of her husbands murder.

โ€œMeryl Streep says you have to love every character whether they are evil or not. I thought about that for a very long time, and while I love and adore Meryl and everything sheโ€™s done, I donโ€™t think I agree. I didnโ€™t love Hedwig Hรถss, and I never will.โ€

She is certainly one to watch
