Kudos to all the various Mastodon instances for not falling over during the WWDC keynote. I used Mastodon just as I would have used Twitter in years past, and it worked great.

When I do anything involving entering or modifying text on my phone, I feel like I’m wearing boxing gloves. It feels so much worse than doing the same task on my Mac, both practically and emotionally.

No login prompts, no ads, no spoilers: just the movie and TV info you want, fast. Callsheet by @caseyliss is out today: https://www.caseyliss.com/callsheet

As @ismh already said, Callsheet is an example of indie app development at its best: take an existing app that doesn’t respect its users and make a better, faster, nicer version of it. Worth every penny.

Nearly all the code and prose I’ve written in my entire life has been written in BBEdit, an app I’ve used for its entire 30-year existence.

If you’re looking for a great Mac text editor, it’s currently on sale for $30 with the code BBEDIT30 at https://www.barebones.com/store/

The Swift API guidelines are really good. They’re worth reading even if you’re not interested in Swift just to see an example of how to communicate this kind of information well. https://www.swift.org/documentation/api-design-guidelines/

From the DOJ complaint:

“Apple inhibits third-party smartwatches from maintaining a reliable connection with the iPhone.”

To be fair, Apple does that to its own smartwatches too.

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

In classic Mac OS, I used to use a utility that would comb through all of memory (no memory protection!) looking for strings. I used it to recover text from unsaved documents after an application crashed, or if I accidentally hit the wrong button in a dialog, etc.

This kind of thing is harder to do on modern systems, but I’m glad to see people are still out there doing it. (But, yeah, don’t type large amounts to of text into web browsers…)

I’m not linking this @snazzyq video just because it agrees with everything I’ve been saying for years on @atpfm about Apple and gaming…but it’s also not a coincidence that so many knowledgeable people have the same thoughts on the subject. https://youtu.be/ZZrnciMxksM

If anyone at Apple who works on TestFlight and/or Launch Services follows me, please look at FB12770062 which is about to be closed as “not a bug” by someone who does not seem to understand my report.

The TestFlight versions ONLY of both my Mac apps launch in a “stopped” state (state “T” shown in “ps”) when set to launch on login. Launch Services debug logging shows a “modifier” of LSLaunchStopped=true, which seems related.
