How is Mastodon working for creators? Well, this particular creator thinks itโ€™s going quite well! My Kickstarter campaign that finished out yesterday at nearly $170K had about 9% tracked from Mastodon, and itโ€™s possible it was twice that when figuring some browsers/firewalls suppress referrals and adding people who signed up for my announcement email list by hearing about it on Mastodon. This chart shows all tracked social media, 17.5% by dollar volume of the total, broken down by site.

So.. if I did my math right, that's $1 per Mastodon follower and almost $3 per Bluesky follower. Compared to mere cents on the other platforms.

Which tells me its much more effective to sink time into growing an already "large" follower base on smaller social medias than it is to bother growing (what are effectively small) follower bases on the big platforms.

Today we give the possibility of customizing our characters in whatever vaguely-RPG influenced title for granted.
In 1984, that possibility was basically absent from non-RPG titles. Skool Daze is an interesting, if rare, exception. The 1984 Spectrum (and C64) title gave players the possibilty of re-naming all the major characters in the game (teachers, the nerd, the bully, etc), thus giving many a first glimpse of immersion...

@TimWardCam @libreture Read the books (several times), watched the 30 episode Chinese adaptation (good, more faithful, but frequently plodding) and binged the Netflix one. The new show pulls some clever tricks to retain the core cast across the time jumps; and some of the ETO internal political stuff got left on the floor. But otherwise it moves briskly and covers most of the stuff. S01 ends just after the introduction of the WallFacers so maybe 1/3 of the way through TDF.

Much Recommended.

@TimWardCam @libreture I too am a bit skeptical on how they'll deal with the ending of book 3 (agree, its a tough nut to adapt that), but based on how they dealt with the book 1 to book 2 transition, it will at least be interesting.

Printing and analysing temperature towers to have good print parameters per spool. Itโ€™s still annoying that you have to generate spool specific gcode or manually fiddle with the temperature while printing instead of telling the printer โ€œI am using spool #3, thatโ€™s the orange PLA with 215ยฐC for the first layer and 205ยฐC for all other layers, as you knowโ€.

If people were to "follow" your Neocities page, what would they want to see show up in their feeds? pages updated? new index.html entries added?
Interacting "read only" with your static site can be spoofed with some clever json or some light javascripting methink.

@ApisNecros @nixCraft When I started in the late 90s, that 1% was more spent daydreaming about what the upcoming weekend in the clubs or what video games I was gonna play tonite.

Now in the 3rd decade of my career that figure is at least 20+% thinking of that farmhouse, to the point where I spend altogether too much time adjusting my "when can I retire" spreadsheet to see where I can accelerate that.

When we travel I'm packed the night before and there's a mostly completed checklist on the kitchen counter, everything staged by the back door.

GF's executive disfunktion lets her think/worry about everything for two weeks up to, but doesn't start packing till the morning of.

Every time we travel I target to leave by 9 am. If we're out the door by noon its a good start to the trip.
