More on nationwide AT&T mobile outage

  • Only the AT&T network has gone down (and apparently also impacting aspects of use of the FirstNet first responders network built by AT&T).

  • Other carriers may be experiencing congestion in some areas as a result of the AT&T outage, but they have not reported any significant outages.

  • MVNO carriers (e.g. Cricket) that actually operate on the AT&T network will be affected, because they do not actually operate their own networks.

  • AT&T says a cyber attack was not involved. My top bet is cascade failure during a software update due to their incompetent network design and
    terrible support.

  • 911 says use landlines to reach them. In California, AT&T is currently before the CPUC trying to end all landline services, and later even VoIP on anything other than fiber, and most areas don't have fiber.

  • Use of Wi-Fi calling has been suggested, but most people don't have that set up, and it's useless if you're not near a Wi-Fi AP you can use, including the very large number of people who now depend on their phones as their only Internet access.

@lauren I thought AT&T was an MVND. Pretty sure it was for New England at one point recently...

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@lauren I wonder what I was remembering... I could have sworn around the time of the Cingular merger that AT&T was paying for time on other towers because they had no infrastructure here. Bow I'm curious what it was that I'd read back then... 🤔

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@lauren Gotcha - that makes sense... So they sort of acted like one out of necessity, but weren't one from a regulatory standpoint?

It's really very simple: the difference between a software engineer and a software developer is that software engineers call themselves "software engineers" instead of "software developers".

And that's literally all.

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@jasongorman Software Engineers are in the US, most other places, they're developers because it's illegal to call yourself an engineer if you aren't one (e.g., Canada) 😉

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@Di4na
My mistake!
I know we've had to be careful with job titles in several countries, but I'd thought it was the US that was the exception. Probably should be more common to control the title, imo.

Someone needs to do some basic data science on the correlation between ending your posts with "..." and being a total racist.

I suspect the correlation is STRONG and it's because they're trying to heavily hint and what they don't really have the balls to say out loud.

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@Loukas As a frequent ellipsis user who learned the habit from early IM communities (and who strives to not be an asshole), I've always considered it a mark of the Olds who were just early to tech... (See there? Totally instinctive. Trying hard not to be a racist, tho!)

The year is 1989.

We are making a mix tape.

Everyone gets to add one song.

Which song are you adding?

I'll start. Don't Stop Me Now by Queen.

UPDATE:

1989 is here.

A playlist created in collaboration with friends on Mastodon. ❤️

EDIT:

Ok I added a bunch more. There is almost 12 hours of music on the list! That's 16 x 45 minute mix tapes!! Thanks everyone.

A home networking TIL: our house has Cat5 ethernet in the walls which taps out at 100Mbps, but we have nearly 1Gbps coming into the house

TIL about MoCA, which lets you run up to 2.5Gbps over existing TV coaxial cables (which our house has as well)! https://til.simonwillison.net/networking/ethernet-over-coaxial-cable

wcbdata,
@wcbdata@vis.social avatar

@simon Cat-5 will absolutely handle 1 gbps without breaking a sweat. If it's wired well, it'll do 2.5 gbps within the spec, and could do more if short, well-assembled, and pushed a bit. You might need a better router or switch, but the wire is not limiting you to 100Mbit unless it's cat-5 jacks with speaker wire running through the walls..

Hey vis.social folks!

You may have heard about the possible bluesky-bridging to mastodon.

We are currently looking into how it might work or impact our server (and server costs). Also, considering what looks like an un-ethical non-consensual opt-out-only approach.

Our moderation team is looking into it, and working to learn more.

The next in my Decay Theory series of articles for Atlas Obscura just went up today! In this article I cover why preservation of endangered buildings is so critical and why it can make such a difference to a community - far from only being memorials to sentimentality, historic structures that are repurposed also can provide a substantial economic boost. Check it out! https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/column-preservation-of-abandoned-places

@AbandonedAmerica Reminds me a bit of the successful - and long, and expensive - restoration of the Norwood Theater in Norwood, MA (https://norwoodstage.com/about-us). It's turned out to be absolutely beautiful, and still seems to be vibrant a decade later!

    Remember when COVID happened and many workers died?

    Remember when the workers that remained started demanding better pay and conditions?

    Remember when workers, even unorganized workers, had the leverage?

    Remember when there were more jobs than workers? (No one wants to work anymore! 😭)

    None of that has changed. We're still there.

    Remember when business leaders said they had to fire people & squeeze them & take losses in order to gain back the upper hand?

    That's what this is.
