This will be my forum for IT security and reliability, high tech and high science … but also retro tech, old Apple stuff … no really old … no, older than that. It's helpful for each audience to have these accounts separated.

Honestly the best incidental audio timings were all a coincidence — the “squeak” of the tray removal, the LED lighting up, and the green blinking lights on the drive bays — all pure luck on the first attempt, when dragging clips onto the timeline.

Tried stringing along a scammer calling from "Telstra" and she hung up in the middle of the call. Don't know what's going on there, I try to sound meek and agreeable but they somehow suss me out. What should I be doing to waste more of their time?

whophd,
@whophd@ioc.exchange avatar

@timrichards OK ill answer this rhetorical question sincerely — and do it from my alt account where the local posts are about information security

Short version: They only want scared + ignorant.

Long version: Do you have any concept of how many marks they have to scope to make the con work? It’s thousands or millions, the more electronic it gets.

It’s not just in their interests, but in the name of survival, to weed you out. Bad spellings are just the start of it.

If you can’t play along VAGUELY like a mark who pays, they’ll sniff you out and know they’re wasting their time. It’s not worth 2 seconds to say goodbye. Just hang up.

But a corollary — I do encourage you to learn. Keep trying. The longer you play them out, the less profitable their shameful deceit is. And while they talk to you, they talk to one less victim.

Maybe you have to react more like they expect. More surprise? More worry I think. They need fear.

To celebrate the Mac’s 40th anniversary, some of my old school Macintosh cross stitch projects. First up, the happy Mac startup icon on a classic checkerboard gray background. 1/10

whophd,
@whophd@ioc.exchange avatar

@yakkoj @Gmatom There really was a divide in the philosophy of richly defined filesystems with a centrally-controlled truth versus a free-for-all

Apple in fact had multiple OSs and filesystems in the 1980s with tables of creator codes and file types, and plenty of “reserved” spaces for the future. @siracusa might like to talk about that one day … but ProDOS had its own set of 4-letter codes separate to Macintosh HFS I think — anything was better than the original Apple DOS 3.3 that had a single character, like “B” for binary (an “app”) and “T” for text and “A” for AppleSoft BASIC code. I forget if graphics (full screen pages) had one.

By the time the 1990s ended and Windows dominated, Unix beckoned, and interoperability was its own burden, it was twice bitten thrice shy, and I think OS X took a more pragmatic approach

Unix itself uses “file”, an app that takes a brute-force approach to determine contents via a pattern-matching database — and yet, never fully leveraged it

You know how when you haven't tasted anything sweet for a while and when you finally have a bite of dessert it explodes across your taste buds like a kind of euphoria?

Well, I've had a tough few months and then yesterday I lost my cell phone in a taxi. After an evening of self-recrimination and dread about having to replace it, this morning I got it back. It was in the lost and found. This tiny piece of kindness and good luck almost reduced me to tears of gratitude. It was a good day.

The Country That Bombs Its Own People

Visual evidence, data and interviews show that the Myanmar military’s campaign of terror, which began after a coup sparked widespread resistance, is getting worse.

Even for a country long notorious for military abuses, the violence and humanitarian crisis now are unprecedented, many experts say.

You know what we’ve never had in the arc of history from the Dot Com Boom and Pets dot com, to the mobile web and “there’s an app for that”, to Web 3.0 and crypto and the metaverse and AI chatbots telling you everything?

We’ve never had a “waiting room” app or website. It could sign up doctors’ surgeries and dentists and hospitals, and over the last 25 years it would’ve informed you of the BARE MINIMUM of information “you have X mins remaining / are required to return to the waiting room / have progressed to X in the queue”

In 1998 that would have been via dial-in automated voice. In 2003 it would have sent you an SMS. In 2008 it would have been with an app on your smartphone. In 2013 it would have been with a really good app — giving walking directions, ETA on demand, and notifying each other of location. In 2018 it would have been with an optional watch app so you don’t miss your appointment and can work in an office while “waiting for a doctor”.

It’s 2023.

@Terra @stanford @TerribleMaps I'm having evil thoughts 🤔

Because the next question is: What is the maximum byte size of a PDF?

Because then it gives us some kind of boundary as to what level of detail we can put in (notwithstanding a plethora of data formats, compression, 3D, and other metadata)

After all — I realised yesterday that a 4K-quality photo I turned into a photo frame, was from a far smaller source image than I remembered — just 600 kB! (attached)

"Be kind" is not a complete thought. Be kind to who? And don't say "Be kind to everyone!🤗" Because it's not possible to be kind to everyone.

Mr. Rogers is often held up as the example of someone that was kind to everyone. But even he roasted racists! He was unsympathetic to bigots who wanted to hold on to America's tradition of segregation. Something, something, paradox of tolerance.

"Be kind" is often the coward's way out of speaking up for those that need defending.
