REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

Happy 30th to 1.0.0, announced by Guido van Rossum on 27 Jan 1994 in comp.lang.misc! 🎂 🎈 3️⃣0️⃣ 🍾 🎉

Python 1.0.0 is out!

Guido van Rossum
27 Jan 1994

--> Tired of decyphering the Perl code you wrote last week?

--> Frustrated with Bourne shell syntax?

--> Spent too much time staring at core dumps lately?

Maybe you should try Python, the next generation object-oriented
scripting and prototyping language, with a readable syntax.

Read in full:
https://groups.google.com/g/comp.lang.misc/c/_QUzdEGFwCo/m/KIFdu0-Dv7sJ

winkleink,
@winkleink@mastodon.social avatar

@hugovk 3 biggest things in the announcement for me.

  1. Scripting and prototyping language.
  2. Question if someone has a web browser.
  3. 1.76MB file is unwieldy

Now Python is everywhere and has become the BASIC for people new to programming.

The web is terrible without adblocks now. It's everywhere, some sites it's literally every other paragraph, and then a video that appears over content and more.

For personal use I'd still recommend a used laptop with Windows on it.
More versatility and with Chrome browser (or any other) it's fully functional.
Chromebooks are great for locked down environments but to me limit options and flexibility.

@geerlingguy Over time I've cared less about the Raspberry Pi specifically.
What they did was get SOC computers out there which has been great for maker/tinkerers/inventors.

It's no longer 2012, the market has moved on. Expectations have changed. Competitors have entered the market.

All of which is good for choice.

It does mean RPF which is the mission side has less of a following than before with most people just wanting supply of boards and software updates.

Hyundai recalls 1.6 million gas-powered cars due to potential car fires

The problem is an ABS module that can leak brake fluid, causing a short, then fire.

@arstechnica Appreciate the article but not the tone in this paragraph.

Kind of shows you've an agenda (similar to what you're accusing others of having)

In addition, to me, the more useful metric is the ratio of ICE fires v ICE cars on the road and EV fires v EV cars on the road.

If I have an EV or ICE car what is the change of it catching fire.

@racesimcentral do you know if Project Cars 2 pulled the cars no longer licensed when they delisted the game.
I’ve Project Cars 2 Deluxe Edition on PS4 (playing PS5). It’s reporting the DLCs are installed but I can only see 52 cars instead of 180! I keep hearing are in the game.

I’m trying to see if there something I can do to restore the cars or if this is what I’ve now got.

On PS4 was installed on external drive and plugged drive into PS4 so original install from PS Store.

Either will be better than Trump or the Tories for another 4 years.

@ianRobinson it’s realising that elections are not absolute. It’s nudging the National in the direction you want it to go.

The real risk is people with extreme views will come out to vote while the complacent won’t bother so a higher ratio of extreme will vote than ratio of complacent.

I'm on console but a couple of years ago they did a PC Bundle with Assetto Cora Ultimate, Assetto Corsa Competizione, rFactor 2, Automobilista, Automobilista 2, Nascar Heat 2 and Drift21.

It also had 3m of iRacing that now long expired.

I bought as definitely a great way to get all these games for £20.

@racesimcentral I don’t understand why consoles require certification. If a common API was exposed that all games could use any wheel/pedals couldbe made compatible and updates to drivers and individual game setting would’ve easier.

    DD Pro 5Nm Ready2Race bundle is €700

Not idea specifically but it looks like the pin on the 315-5364 that's being connected to is a ground pin.

What's the other end of the cap tied to?

I'm going with someone in there before you due to the flux. Factory made I'd have expected them to clean the board with alcohol. (Or at least that's what I've seen when factory mods needed to be done)

Of course the smoking piles of pollution can be replaced and are being replaced by cleaner energy sources.
We're in the transition stage but the end point is clear if for no other reason than fossil fuels will become more and more uneconomical as they get more costly to source.
    While renewal energy gets cheaper.
Knowing fossil fuels are an ever decreasing resource I'm delighted renewals are coming.

I don’t understand why people who send me emails to promote their software or products expect me to answer them, even just to tell them I’m not interested.

They sent me something, without any invitation. They want to sell me something, or get me to promote their product. Why would they feel I have an obligation to let them know I don’t want to? Just accept that no answer after a few weeks means « no », and stop wasting time and energy on emails.

@thelinuxEXP simple (and I would expect this is more a rant post than actual question)

Because it's cheap and it works well enough.
