Indeed, not only exporting the carbon footprint though. If we look at companies like 3M dumping their PEFAS in open water/drink water supply, they are also doing it actively in the west. The big corporations are actively pushing the blame to consumers, but we as consumers don't get to chose what packaging is used, what filthy chemicals are used or how production waste is handled.
It gets even worse when you look at what governments do to help these companies pollute. Here in The Netherlands, a data center of Facebook pays less taxes on the energy usage, than a household. Tata Steel is actively giving the residents of the local town cancer. Meanwhile the government allows Tata Steel to declare their own emissions, it is as if the butcher can audit their own meat. Another great example are the farmers, they play the narrative that they are important for our food supply, they shout "no farmer = no milk/cheese/whatever". Meanwhile, The Netherlands exports more than 95% of our farmed products.
It is all smokes and mirrors, while pushing the blame on the consumers.
The good news about the Titanic submarine situation is we’re going to start major search and recovery operations and rolling news coverage for each migrant boat incident, right?
You are making it seem as if migrants are not helped when their boat sinks, which is not the case. There are plenty of migrants saved. The only similarity between both incidents, is that the people involved knew the risks and gave consent to go anyway.
All I can remember, throughout my life, is news articles regarding climate change. A more plausible thesis would be that they overcommunicated, saturating the news and making it therefore less impactful. But failing to communicate? Wow!
it costs anywhere from $0 to $25,000 annually to insure your family
you get TONS of mail after each and every visit and you learn how to ignore the first three "bills" that arrive until the "real" bill shows up of what you actually pay
yes you pay for things beyond the money you pay for healthcare in general
keeping your prescriptions current is now your half-time job
I can't say whether Facebook joining the fediverse (ditto Google, which won't want to miss this opportunity) will kill or absorb the fediverse, though it's obviously and rationally something to worry about.
But preemptively blocking them -- and the people already using them -- from your instance guarantees less relevance for the fediverse.
It also guarantees, if my instance joins such a boycott, that I'll find a new instance.
I don't mind, perhaps even like, the idea that Meta/Google and others link to the fediverse. It would bring so much more content and value. However, we must restrict there ability to gather and abuse user data the way they are doing now. If they want to store every bit of information of the people an serve them targeted ads on their own instance, fine by me. As long as they cannot track or serve ads on other instances.
And that is where I think it will be very difficult, since I do think that they potentially can profile other fediverse instances. I'm not sure how we can prevent that.
Smartphones Must Have User-Replaceable Batteries by 2027 in the EU zone https://www.pcmag.com/news/eu-smartphones-must-have-user-replaceable-batteries-by-2027 I think Companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung will next create two versions of their phones—one for the EU with replaceable batteries and one for the rest of the world. They go to lengths to ensure they can squeeze extra dollars out of everyone while following laws. Just give everyone an option to replace batteries 🔋
Is that also true for e-sim? E.g. iPhones as of the X were all dual-sim here in NL. We could use the physical sim card (which I believe isn't possible in the US?) and an e-sim. The setup works well. So is it not possible to use 2x e-sim in the US?
@gruber Probably a yes and no. Next time I'm buying a TV, I will probably consider not buying high-end. Nor will I invest in a new surround sound system. If I want to watch movies at home, the Vision seems like a better investment. They can both exist for different purposes, but the headset will impact the way we view media and the buying decisions we make
How big is that leap though? We are already 3d printing houses, or doing pretty extensive prefab in factories.
I'm currently going through a full house renovation, and I do see a lot of tasks that AI can assist with or even take over. Things like architecture, planning or assisting with procurement of materials at the best possible price.
I'm not sure I understand why "Threads" and "Microblogs" are separate entities in kbin. From my understanding, "Threads" are like Reddit's link/image posts and "Microblogs" are like text posts. Why are these only viewable in separate tabs? It seems like a bad thing to completely separate certain content from the same Magazine and make it unable to view everything at once. Am I misunderstanding something?
@bleuy007 Agreed, but surely there must be a way to combine them in one overview in the future. The way I see it, there is still much room for improvement, but we gotta start somewhere. I think the main priorities for now are stability (getting some 404 errors left and right, which is understandable) and a mobile app. Optimizing things like overviews can be a nice next step
