‘Simply mind-boggling’: world record temperature jump in Antarctic raises fears of catastrophe (www.theguardian.com)

An unprecedented leap of 38.5C in the coldest place on Earth is a harbinger of a disaster for humans and the local ecosystem...Poleward winds, which previously made few inroads into the atmosphere above Antarctica, are now carrying more and more warm, moist air from lower latitudes – including Australia – deep into the...

If you thought the nights were warmer in January, for nearly all Australia🇦🇺, you would be right. Much of east coast was highest Average Tmin on record. Averaged over Australia it was third highest for the month in records going back to 1910.

Time series of area averaged minimum temperatures for January for Australia. 2024 had the third largest warm anomaly based on records going back to 1910.

Huh, BBC says 64F (18C) is the "recommended minimum" healthy indoor temperature?!? We usually set things to 62F here (and wear more clothing)--and often let it drift down to 58F or colder overnight. I'd be wearing a t-shirt and shorts in a British household, I think!!! https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240115-low-cost-heating-hacks-how-to-make-your-home-stay-warmer-for-longer

There won’t be any surprises when and announce their official 2023 tomorrow (11am EST / NY Friday January 12, 2024). … … tune in (link here to YouTube…) https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-noaa-to-announce-2023-global-temperatures-climate-conditions/

2023 announcement
🥵 🔥
I think it’s likely 2023 was the hottest year since the mid Pleistocene transition or perhaps since Greenland had its current size, even earlier— but Gavin says that’s an announcement for another day. (And we are working on demonstrating that… but scientists tend to be conservative.) probably that announcement will happen in 2024 barring any crazy volcanoes.

says 2023 1.17C (2.11F) above the 1950-1980 average

(Why so hot?
Russ misspoke when he attributes some of the heat to Hunga Tonga- scientists have now figured out that isn’t so— it’s our GHG plus ENSO plus ??? Unknown but perhaps aerosol changes/decreases over ocean)

Read this article about #methane #hydrates observed off the coast of Africa moving 40km from deep-cold waters to the continental shelf:
https://scitechdaily.com/fire-ice-time-bomb-discovered-climate-changes-deep-ocean-threat/

Relevant because one of the leading theories for what caused the #PETM (jump in #CO2 and #temperatures at 55 Ma) is the #clathrate gun-- frozen methane in the abyssal ocean thawing & causing sudden warming.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clathrate_gun_hypothesis
But it hinges on methane being shallow enough to being vulnerable to melt.

Not time to panic, but wow.
